about Woodland Woolworks on Tue Feb 01 16:00:11 -0600 2011

Last week I went to Woolworks to check out spinning wheels. Before I went in I actually called them to make sure they had the wheels I wanted to look at. I don't know much about spinning wheels, but one of the staff, Jennifer, was super helpful. When I talked to her on the phone, I grilled her with all sorts of newbie questions and she was more than happy to answer them and was super patient (which is rare when to talk to people over the phone these days). When I got to the store, she gave me a high level explanation of the wheels and basically let me test them as I wished. I stayed there for a good hour testing wheels and I decided to rent one. Their rental policy is very nice: they give you the option to put the rental price towards the wheel if you decide to buy (that same wheel). This seems to be the only place in the Portland area where I can try most wheels from major manufacturers, so it was worth the drive for me.

I looked at their yarn a little and they had a huge selection (which is a surprise since their store is pretty small). They also have a nice selection of natural fibers. I haven't been there before the change in ownership, but as far as my personal experience goes, I had a great visit this time and I would not hesitate giving them my business.

about Yarn Garden on Tue Feb 01 16:06:35 -0600 2011

I had a similar experience t Yarn Garn as irulan. When I went there, no one greeted us (even though there was 2 employees there doing much of nothing). When we asked the lady questions about needles, she seems borderline annoyed because she had to take the needles out from behind the counter for us to look at.

Their selection is good, but the yarn quality that they have is not great. I didn't get a really good vibe from the store due to the average service received. It seems like Jo-Ann type service but minus the discounts and coupons that Jo-Ann has.

This is such a welcoming place! I went here for a knit night and to do a little research on spinning wheels and fiber. The owner, Cindy, is so friendly and she's very knowledgeable with fiber. I love how she carries natural fiber by the ounce (which is a good way to get started). The stuff she carries is great quality and a lot of it is local!

I love how their yarn is organized. There's a big sign with the yarn specs along with where it came from. You can tell a lot of love was put into this store. I really felt at home. Even though the parking sucks at times, this shop is going to be a regular shop for me.
