about CloseKnit, Inc. on Wed Jul 31 20:30:13 -0500 2013

Single downtown storefront Local Yarn Shop. Not huge. Reasonable variety of quality yarns. No spinning equipment or supplies that I saw. Friendly personnel. I arrived sweaty and wearing workout clothes, directly off my bike, not looking like a typical yarn-fiend. They were nice and asked me if I was looking for anything in particular. I did find some unusual yarns, but mostly national LYS brands. (Quality yarn, but not rare.)

There is a table to sit around and knit. The store is generally well organized and bright.

about Montoya Fiber Studio on Wed Jul 31 20:36:34 -0500 2013

Very crowded. Only a single-storefront. Given the space limitations, they've done a pretty good job. There are a couple seats. The yarn is fairly well organized, but not super easy to navigate because of the space restraints. I found only a couple solitary skeins of non-national-brand yarn.

I've been in here twice and I was acknowledged by the owner on both occasions, but not really greeted. She seemed to be busy with other customers both times I was there and because I wasn't looking for anything in particular I didn't bother her.

She does carry Addis, which is really nice.

Great store in the northern part of Chicago. Well lit, well organized, comfortable. The last time I was there they did not carry a large selection of needles, which is about the only bad thing I can say about the place. They carry VERY high quality national brands (e.g. Madelinetosh, Sweet Georgia, Three Irish Girls, Malabrigo) and they have it very well organized and displayed. They also carry a few local independent dyers, which I really appreciate. (I love rarities.) The staff is also VERY friendly and helpful.

I did not see any spinning supplies.

Small. Tiny. But they have laid it out in such a way that it's still useable.

I like the table in the middle of the room. Several times I've been here and people were at the table knitting and chatting.

Service is hit or miss. I've been in a couple times and not even gotten a greeting, and other times I've gone in and they are extremely friendly and helpful.

It's just too small to be a very useful regular store. If I'm in the area already, I'll go in. I'll probably even buy something. But I won't go out of my way to get there.

No spinning supplies that I noticed.

HANDS DOWN the best fiber-arts store in the Chicago area.

HUGE selection of high quality yarns and needles. Very well organized. Warm and friendly staff. Spinning supplies(!!!!) in the basement. Clearance in the basement. Enough space for a couple of groups to sit and work and socialize.

WELL WORTH THE TRIP from anywhere. Even out of town.

Small (but not tiny) LYS in beautiful downtown Highland Park. The quality of the selection is in keeping with the upscale community. Keeping in mind the space limitations, they have a beautiful selection of yarns (including several cabled yarns, my FAVORITE!!!) The owner(?) is also a dyer and the store carries her lovely work as well. The decor is bright and cheerful with hand-knits EVERYWHERE. One large couch and a big comfy chair for sitting and socializing while you stitch. The staff is all very friendly and helpful (one of them was actually writing out a pattern for a customer while I was shopping!)

Also, they have a few spinning supplies and a spinning night once a month.

about handmade BERLIN on Wed Jul 31 21:22:23 -0500 2013

This store is the most like a North American Local Yarn Store as exists in Berlin. It's a very nice store. Even the SERVICE is friendly and helpful. They have beautiful, luxurious yarns (most of which are also available in every LYS in the US), but not so many to make socks or a sweater.

For "workhorse" yarns or a more european experience, go to Loops or Fadeninsel.

about Fadeninsel on Wed Jul 31 21:24:03 -0500 2013

Very good selection of quality European (mostly German) yarns.

Service may be lacking, but the selection is great.

about Loops on Wed Jul 31 21:25:45 -0500 2013

It would be sad if this store were closed. I found it to have a very nice selection of European yarns (not quite as many as Fadeninsel, but still great). The workers don't really speak too much English, but I didn't have too much trouble.

about A Good Yarn on Thu Aug 01 03:01:42 -0500 2013

This is one of the best yarn stores I've ever been to in my life. Seriously. Right up there with Loopy in Chicago.

GREAT selection of yarn and needles and notions. Friendly, helpful staff. The clientele tends to be a little bit "old lady" but hey, this is SARASOTA. There's no getting around that.

This store is worth a special trip, if you're anywhere nearby.
