about Lambspun of Colorado on Wed Jul 15 13:23:47 -0500 2009

I like Lambspun, it is close to my house and it is nice to go have brunch at the attached cafe (different ownership) and then shop for some yarn!

Sadly, if you haven't just eaten and become accustomed to it, the food smell can be a little overwhelming. I have had mixed service experiences there, not rude but not very attentive. I was approached by staff and asked about a very specific yarn (a very popular brand) and the woman told me she wouldn't even know where to start looking.

But then other times I have been offered the free patterns they have and had great experiences with helpful people. I will say that only ONE time have they offered to ball my yarn for me.

Sock yarn selection is a little lacking, but last time I was in there I noticed some new brands.

They have their own "house brand" yarn, lots of books and magazines, including crochet, spinning, weaving.

As others have said, good place for spinners and weavers.

The shop is not so much small as it is full of stuff with a low ceiling. The downstairs is filled with the workhorse yarns, like what seems to be every color of Cascade 220 ever made. Upstairs has dormers which open to reveal all the novelty and specialty yarns.

It is a crowded place and hard to get around if it is busy. The back of the upstairs is a little dark for viewing yarn. I have had mixed experiences with service, once waiting a long time while both staff discussed yardage for hats with a customer and neither offered to ring up my two-skein purchase while they talked. Usually the staff asks if you need anything right away and then pretty much leaves you alone (not pushy or hovering).

Great selection of yarns as well, they carry some of the more rare yarns.

UPDATE: They have moved the register downstairs and reorganized. The new set up is much more open and inviting. They still have a great selection, and there is a large table downstairs where knitters often hang out.

Awesome place, a lot of the fiber and yarn is from the animals of the owners, or from fiber producers here in Colorado. I LOVE that they are open on Sunday!

Price is a little high (not that the yarn is overpriced, just that they carry mostly higher-level yarns), but they were really new and said they are constantly getting new yarns.

Owners were great and I can't wait to go back and see the expanding selection!

UPDATE: Certainly check this place out. I found some really good prices on yarns that other shops in my area don't carry.

We stopped here for just a few minutes while we were visiting the area (from Colorado). The ladies at the shop were wonderfully nice and friendly.
I love the variety of yarns, from the basic Cotton Ease to some very fancy specialty fibers.

Most important for me -- I don't *look* like a typical knitter (whatever that is! hahaha), so sometimes don't get the best reception right away (people assume that I am shopping for someone else or talk to me like I am an idiot). These ladies never did that. They said hi and asked me if I needed any help, and then talked to me like I was a regular. It was refreshing.

It was a bit hard to find at first, it shares the side entrance to the jewelry place which faces the main drag. Worth looking for!

I have been to SSS a couple of times now. The first time I was happy with the selection and size of the shop, found some things I needed. The service is a bit ... odd. An employee came up to us as we were browsing books and asked if we needed help finding anything. We replied that we were just browsing. She got a very cross look on her face and said "We are closing in 5 minutes!" and stormed off. We really didn't realize how late it was, and we did have planned purchases. We hurried to buy what we selected, but she still seemed grumpy with us.

Second time we were not so late, and a different employee treated us very well, balling our yarn and everything.

I love this yarn. Huge selection of bases and really great hand-dyed colorways. Very affordable. Also lots of roving!
Small shop, so gets crowded.

about Maverick Fiber Arts on Wed Aug 18 16:47:04 -0500 2010

The employee working when I went (was not the regular owner) seemed either way too 'helpful' or afraid we would steal something. She shadowed our every move and commented on everything we touched or looked at. It was smothering. She did the same to another couple that came in the store while we were there. Maybe she was just nervous, but it was distracting.

She was just trying to be helpful, though. Okay selection, and of course it is a small shop (aren't they all!?)

Cute store, decent yarn selection, AWESOME shop cat.
It is nice and welcoming, with seating areas in two rooms. Not huge, but the bumping into others was not so bad as some places!

I went to the new Fort Collins location the week they opened. It was very cool to be able to touch all the yarns I have only seen online before.

People were friendly and several times we were asked if we needed help by one of many employees.

I doubt I will be spending much time here, as it is not on my end of town and I already live within a mile of three yarn shops in Fort Collins... yeah we are pretty spoiled.
