about Fantastic Fibers on Sun Sep 07 18:13:23 -0500 2008

Just got back from my 7th trip to Alaska and was really disappointed in Fantastic Fibers this trip. It doesn't look like it's been kept up, and although there's still a ton of yarn there, I'm sure there were some of the same ones that were there when I last visited in 2006. Also, this is a home/store, and the dog smells were really strong this time.

about The Courtyard on Mon Jun 23 13:06:43 -0500 2008

A combination yarn store and used book store. Hard to find, and not really worth the effort. There was nothing here that I couldn't get elsewhere, and the owner/employee didn't speak to me.

about Knitting Grounds on Sun Sep 07 18:16:56 -0500 2008

Just visited Alaska and saw the new store. Great service and some good local yarns. The only drawback is that because of the trees, it's hard to find if you don't know exactly where it is.

about The Quilt Tree on Sun Sep 07 18:15:07 -0500 2008

Very overpriced. You can do better elsewhere for the brands they carry.

about Simply fibers on Tue Jul 29 14:12:58 -0500 2008

She's Crafty is horrible and doesn't have a very good selection. I refuse to shop there.

Very nice little store in Eagle River.

about Red Purl on Tue Aug 05 09:15:05 -0500 2008

I rate this an "okay" shop. It's fine to stop at on your way somewhere else, but don't go out of your way to find it. The selection was minimal, and although they carried a lot of Malabrigo, there was nothing out of the ordinary. The dog was the friendliest "person" in the shop, too.

A cute store in downtown Holland. Not a huge selection, but they have all the basics.

Very cute little yarn store in Seward. Worth a stop if you're visiting the area.

about Yarn Worx / ONLINE STORE ONLY on Fri Mar 26 15:56:33 -0500 2010

This is a very welcoming store, although not all the stock is in yet. Mary is very open to listening to what we want and looking into ordering it. Unfortunately, it's a little out of the way for me, so I know I won't get out there too often, but it's worth the drive if you're in the area.

Just make sure that you turn on the street adjacent to the strip center to turn into the parking lot - the other driveway will cause even the taller vehicles to bottom out. :-)

I made my first trip to Charleston last week and had to check out the shop. Parking is atrocious, and the shop itself is very crowded and hard to maneuver. They had a lot of yarns, but were crammed into shelves, so if you pulled out one color, you probably pulled out another 6 you didn't want. This was an ok shop for me, but not one I'll make an effort to visit again.

Posting an updated review now that the shop has been open for a while. I still like the shop overall, but have some misgivings now. When my knit group first went in, the owner seemed interested in wanting to know what we wanted her to carry. We have no local option for Malabrigo, and discussed it with her. She let us pick some of the colors that we liked, and when the order came in, we went back a couple of times to purchase a few skeins.

In subsequent visits or conversations with her, no less than 4 times did she mention how she had ordered "all this Malabrigo" and it's not selling, like it was our responsibility to purchase all she'd ordered, even though we had purchased the colors we'd requested, and didn't care for the other colors she'd ordered. It has really colored my opinion of this shop.

about Yarn Worx / ONLINE STORE ONLY on Tue Dec 20 01:40:16 -0600 2011

This shop went out of business. Edited to add: Allegedly she's reopening as an online only store, but it appears it keeps getting delayed. I'll stick with my favorite online shops that are more reliable.

about Simply fibers on Tue Dec 20 01:41:44 -0600 2011

Sadly this shop has closed effective December 17, 2011.

about A New Yarn on Tue Mar 06 15:36:34 -0600 2012

It's a shame this is the only shop in Springfield now. My husband went in at Christmas time and the staff was very condescending toward him and unhelpful. Other knitting friends have had poor experiences as well. It's a pretty store, but I'll order online before shopping there.

about A New Yarn on Tue Jun 26 02:57:22 -0500 2012

Received an e-mail that this store is going out of business effective June 30, 2012.

about The Village Yarnery on Wed Oct 26 16:19:22 -0500 2016

Great location, but that's the best thing about this shop. Only open 3 days a week, and while there are some yarn brands not available locally elsewhere, the selection is very slim. Not very welcoming.

about Lowlander Yarn Shop on Wed Oct 26 16:21:08 -0500 2016

Now that they've moved to a bigger location, it's really a lovely store. Big selection of commercial yarns, and I especially like the British yarn brands they're carrying. Very friendly and engaging with customers, and it looks like they've got a great local following for knit groups and classes.

ETA: June 10, 2017 is their last day. Sad to learn they are closing.

about My Sister Knits on Wed Sep 13 11:00:44 -0500 2017

Disappointing stop this morning. We were driving through Ft. Collins on a road trip and deliberately left later so I could stop at the yarn shop when open. It's a cute, well-stocked shop, but it apparently only caters to locals. I was in the shop for 25 minutes and not a single person spoke to me except as I was leaving the yard when a lady offered me grapes she was carrying. Needless to say, I left without buying anything.
