HANDS DOWN the best fiber-arts store in the Chicago area.

HUGE selection of high quality yarns and needles. Very well organized. Warm and friendly staff. Spinning supplies(!!!!) in the basement. Clearance in the basement. Enough space for a couple of groups to sit and work and socialize.

WELL WORTH THE TRIP from anywhere. Even out of town.

Awesome store, they have a "men's knitting" night, all the staff are friendly and approachable, HUGE selection... what can I say, wonderful store.

This store is a bit off the beaten path but well worth the extra trip. You take the CTA Red Line to Harrison and you don't mind a lot of stairs, you can find the Polk Street exit which leaves you right in front of the store. Otherwise you can use the regular Harrison exit and walk about 3 blocks through not the greatest neighborhood.

The store itself is amply stocked, with separate rooms by yarn weight. There are bargains downstairs. Staff was friendly but left me alone until I asked for help, then they were very helpful. There was a nice young man working there - so great to meet a guy who loves working with yarn!

As other commenters have mentioned, there is a ton of Cascade here, but other brands are represented as well. So far this is the best yarn store I have found within Chicago city limits. If you are downtown, love yarn, and have a couple of hours to kill, this is definitely the place to go.

I visited here recently, and was impressed with the store and its selection. There wasn't anything that stood out as a "must have it now" buy, but I'm sure if I lived in Chicago I would be frequenting it often.

Loopy Yarns is such a great shop! I took a class here to learn how to knit socks, and I was hooked. Meg was a wonderful teacher. So easy to pop in for supplies, too, because the location is great. The sale yarn area downstairs is the best. They also did a special order for me when they didn't have enough yarn in the same lot for a man's sweater I wanted to knit. Super service! Love this shop.

The store is packed with yarn, patterns, notions, accessories, and tools. I was amazed to see the selection! I particularly love that they carried so many different brands of needles in so many different materials. The yarn is well-organized and well-stocked. I really liked the small room with books and patterns--I saw so many titles that I'd never spotted before.

The best part, for me, was the student discount. I didn't have to be "in the know" and ask for it--the cashier asked me, I produced my ID, and my order was reduced by 10% for all non-sale items. I even got a lovely tote bag for joining the mailing list.

Although I didn't make a particularly large purchase, the cashier was very friendly and invited me to stop by for the open knitting on Friday. The customer service was really fantastic overall--I left thinking about the next time I could go back.

Great Shop! Visiting Chicago specifically to look at yarn shops and this one did not disappoint. Lots of variety and a nice discount yarn selection. I especially apperciated the large selection of Koigu and Tilli Thomas yarns.

I wish I could have taken this store home with me. I really wanted to have one of everything that store had. The next time I go to Chicago, I'll certainly be going here. My friend (a male non-knitter) even loved the store for the colors and the massive selection!

Best shop in Chicago! The space is warm and welcoming (located in the old Dearborn Station so adding some history as well) and the staff is fantastic. They talk to you not just try to sell you something.

Great shop. Friendly staff, warm store. They are well organized into section and have a large clearence section in the basement. A sock yarn room :) I was in heaven. If you are going looking for a book you will need to grab someone and have them find it for you. Spent 20 minutes looking at their books and still couldn't find it.

Charming little shop I visited on a stopover in Chicago recently. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable about what knitters are currently obsessing over, which is a bonus. The selection of yarn is quite good, especially if you are a sock knitter (I am), though I found some of their prices to be a bit higher than I was used to (coming from Philly, this was a bit of a surprise). It was everything I would expect from a big city yarn store. Their stock of Malabrigo in all forms is really quite excellent.

I, too, made the pilgrimage into Chicago when some friends were in from out-of-state... so I went early to check out Loopy. Wonderful shop! Loaded with quality yarns... the sock yarn selection is impressive... as is the LIBRARY of knitting books! I found my way to the tables in the lower level (yeah... a lower level!) and I relaxed and knitted until my friends arrived. The owner came out and chatted a bit, offered some assistance with the pesky parking meter and even let me use her phone to call the City to report the broken meter. I found the rest of the staff to be a bit indifferent... but it could just be that they were hip, young and trying to get some knitting done! Oh, yeah... they have a GUY on staff! Yeah for MALE KNITTERS!

I visited Loopy Yarns over a year ago, before they moved. I was there on a Saturday and was immediately impressed with the age of the clientele. Everyone was in their 20's. There were people learning to knit, people knitting and socializing, and of course people were shopping. It was a hang out spot! The yarn was high end, but a little bit different from the norm. I fell in love with some Frog Tree Alpaca.

Great new space -- continues with fabulous yarn selection and very helpful staff. Wish I lived in Chicago and could visit more often!

I stopped in on a short trip to Chicago and bought a few nice yarns - I thought it was a nice little spot and would drop in again if I'm in town.

This is the ideal LYS. They carry a wide variety of yarn, patterns and accessories, but are also very friendly and helpful. Vicki and her staff treat you like friends every time you walk in. It's not unusual for knitters to come and just sit, knit and talk. Plus, they are located in the Loop. Their events and Friday gatherings are a lot of fun!

This is my yarn store:) I love friday nights when we all can come and knit and talk ;)I learned how to knit here! Wonderful ladies, great store with jewels hidden everywhere you look!

What a great yarn store! I was in town for a conference and had been told about the store by a recent acquaintance. Great selection of yarns, supplies, books, etc. The staff was friendly and helpful - spending a couple of hours unraveling some lace weight yarn I purchased. Couldn't believe they'd spend the time! I'll be back the next time I'm in town.

by nobarbe on Friday, Oct 05 2007 at 04:52PM CDT

I love loopy yarns!! The ladies there are very sweet - they always wind your yarn for you. I always stop there when I am in the city - definitely worth the cab fair.

by lazysockmonkey on Wednesday, Oct 03 2007 at 05:24PM CDT

This is my favorite yarn store in the city. Vicki, Lisa..Meg, Zoe - all the ladies there are SO nice and they truly value their customers and treat them as friends. I have to travel 2 buses and a train to get there but it's still my first yarn destination.

I was in Chicago last week for a quick little vacation. I found this shop on knitmap and decided I would check it out. My husband and I set out to find it (after a trip to the comic book store for him) and found that is was a little bit of a walk from our hotel. It was well worth the walk! What a great shop! I ended up buying some sock yarn and some needles and one of their canvas bags with their logo on it. It is a great souvenir from the shop. I hope to visit again when I travel to Chicago next.

by jrm on Friday, Sep 21 2007 at 01:42PM CDT

This is my neighborhood yarn store, I live 3 blocks away...which is dangerously close. Always new fibers to look at and purchase, great selection and price points, good people.

by bearybearco on Thursday, Sep 20 2007 at 10:48AM CDT

This is a "must do" on my list whenever we visit Chicago! I love the selection of yarns - different enough than my local selection to make it really fun. The times I have visited, the people have been friendly and just the right amount of helpful. Great Shop!

by Legalknitter on Wednesday, Sep 19 2007 at 01:15PM CDT

Chicago desperately needed this yarn shop!! I think it has best selection of hand-dyed yarn in the city, and carries a broad range of high quality lines and price points in a huge range of colors. It's great for a lunch escape on I-can't-take-this-anymore days at the office and I can always find something new that needs to come home with me. It is equally welcoming to everyone (not just a clique of shop regulars -- we've all seen that happen in yarn shops, right?) and the staff gets the balance of "helpful" and "just let me shop in peace" just right.

by MoebiusFool on Monday, Sep 17 2007 at 11:04AM CDT

I love this shop. It's right outside the Loop. Nice place to sneak to on lunch hour. Great hours. I have never been disappointed. Very helpful staff and beautiful selection.

Thank you so much for the student discount! I tell all of my fellow knitting fiends here at school about you guys :D

by heckenhocker on Sunday, Sep 16 2007 at 07:20PM CDT

Have visited here on several trips to Chicago. Always a warm friendly welcome and a great selection. Have had to return to Chicago to get Christmas presents after sister and mother saw all my new stuff :-)

by ames on Friday, Sep 14 2007 at 08:10AM CDT

I love this place, it's my favorite store in the city. Very welcoming atmosphere, helpful service (although a little dependent on who is working), Vicki and Lisa are wonderful, and they have an awesome sock yarn collection. Books, magazines, lessons, the works. Friday night knitalong, too, although you can come knit whenever.
