Went there this weekend and was pleasantly surprised!

Service: I am under 30 and went with my partner. The staff were perfectly polite and friendly (my dazed and delighted expression at the sheer size of the place may have contributed). The lady behind the counter gave me a quick run-through of the layout when I came in and offered help if I needed any. Several people kindly asked my partner if he needed help (I sent him off to look at colours for his upcoming sweater), but not in a snippy way at all.
I didn't get any snobbish vibe from them that I've had at other stores, so maybe it's just certain people who weren't working that day.

Selection: They've got a good selection of basic workhorse yarns. Lots of colours in Cascades and Patons staples, a bunch of Sirdar, which I don't see often here. Plenty of Briggs and Little too; I like seeing Canadian yarn. Oddly no Berroco, considering they stock a lot of basic yarns. Not much in the higher end range either (no Madelinetosh, Malabrigo, Handmaiden, etc.) but they do have some Manos and BFL.

Seemed to be more heavier yarns than lighter; I was looking for some special sock or fingering weight, maybe hand painted/locally dyed, but the selection was minimal. Lots of pastels in the lighter yarns.

They had a good selection of notions, including lots of buttons.

Prices: On par with other Ottawa shops. They also have a decent sale section with more than just the odd ball or two, and they do warehouse sales regularly.

I live more centrally, so I probably won't go that often, but when I need extended choice in Cascade colours or similar go-to yarns, I'd probably make the trip.

I agree with all of the reviews that the service is not great. "at best on the cusp of being polite" is accurate.

I am in my late 40's.

I love knitting, love yarn, but rarely buy much there due to their poor attitude. I'd rather spend my money somewhere it is appreciated.

And I have experienced the same attitude at Yarn Forward on Bank St.

Strange.

So sad to read these reviews. Not good for business. I don't think I will go there as I am a beginner crocheter and new to the area and have been looking on line for wool shops in Ottawa. So far Yarns Etc.wins.

Interesting to see these comments. Similar view that the stock is pretty wide for basics and sales are good but not exactly friendly - I don't think it has to do with age. However, this seems to be the way most knitting shops are - not just in Ottawa. I miss the women of knit Knackers.

I happened to this site by accident looking up the sales dates at Wooltyme. I thought it was me and am relieved to see there is an atitude at the store that puts a lot of people off. I am over fifty and am an enthusiastic crocheter. The staff are at best on the cusp of being polite.

This store is fairly close to my home. Absolutely love the selection and I haven't had a problem with the service, though I am in my early 50s.

I agree with comments above: lots and lots of yarn, but no smile to greet us.

Not friendly at all. My daughter who is in her 20's gets no respect or help there. They also do not offer a winder for the hanks, I don't expect it done for me but the best they could offer was to sell me a winder. I live and travel on a boat so I have no space for a winder. I also have left hand limitations from a stroke and winding by hand is onerous. They do have a just OK selection. I asked about a merino blend in fingering specifically from Indigo Dragonfly. All the CSR heard was Indigo and wanted to talk colour. It is certainly not the place to go if you are an enthusiastic knitter. YAWN

Looking for Berroco Mosaic Delicate Trellis. Do you carry this.

So much yarn, which was super, but it seemed like a lot of it was acrylic...admittedly, there was some nice acrylic, but it still seemed like a lot of cheap yarn. There was a good amount of higher quality yarn as well. They were in the middle of expanding, which was exciting but made everything a bit chaotic. I loved the sale room!

I didn't talk to the staff much, they didn't approach me and I didn't have any questions. The lady at the cash didn't really seemed all that pleased to help me, so I guess I'd agree with the previous reviews - I'm in my 20s.

I agree about the staff. I am in my 50's and have been going for years. The main reason I go is for the large selection and parking.
I find the staff to be unwelcoming and almost feel as if I am interrupting them just by being in the store.
They definitely need more friendly salespeople and a couple of younger ones would definitely help.

I have to agree with erinknits and cinderellie. I have gone to Wool-Tyme more than ten times, always hoping for a better experience, and it never seems to get any better. I'm under 40 and I definitely feel that the salespeople have always been a little short with me. I don't know why--I buy something every time I'm there. I really just have to stop. There are better places to spend money in this town, and they seem to *enjoy* having younger people there.

Lots of great yarn, and the warehouse sales are pretty good. They don't really seem to like under 30s (perhaps even under 40s) though, particularly one or two ladies.

My FMIL gets good service there though, and likes having a yarn store close to her home.

Despite a huge selection, I find myself uninspired and frequently leaving without much. Some of the staff are very nice, but several seem to be a bit devoid of humour and personality, which leaves me not wanting to return.
