Loved this place! Staff were a LOT of fun. It felt like visiting old friends the first time I walked in the door.

First visit the staff were lovely and helpful. I bought yarn because I wanted to support such a friendly place but had the opposite experience the last time I visited. There were only 2 people in the store: one staff and the other a friend. I interrupted their conversation after being ignored and asked for help, got minimal assistance and left without buying anything and feeling rather depressed. I doubt I will go back.

Ditto! The staff is somewhat better since the change of ownership but the space is still small and still feels claustrophobic when there is more than one or two customers. They have some interesting indie dyers but it didn't seem like they had enough stock to make a large project. I will continue to stop in at Lettuce Knit when I am in Kensington Market to check out what's new but for larger project needs I will go to one of the other yarn shops.

This shop recently changed owners and they are much friendlier than the previous owner, which is a nice change. Some of the same rude/snobbish staff are still around, but overall I find it's improved a lot. Small but nice selection of yarns and spinning fibers.

I just visited the shop and thought it was great! The one person working there was very helpful and friendly and let me browse. Great selection of yarns and loved the Tanis yarns. Also found a scarf/cowl kit by Cosmic Pluto that will be fun to knit. Bought the latest Steven West booklet and the Ysolda Teague booklet. Very nice store and close to the Kensington area which has a lot of funky stores. If you have a connection to the U of T, this is a nice store to check out down the road. Good work, Lettuce Knits!

I had wanted to visit this shop for at least 5 years and finally was able to. We live close to Ottawa so we had over a 3 hour drive to get there, and then spent another half hour looking for parking. I was so disappointed. I didn't see a single sweater quantity of yarn there! They have the usual stuff available at any yarn shop with the exception of the Blue Moon yarns.

The owner was not in the day we went - Laura Chau and Megan were manning the shop. Not snobby, but certainly not friendly. No one even said hello to us. We couldn't browse easily as our way was blocked by the large table in the centre of the shop and the knitters sitting at it.

How this shop became a knitting mecca is beyond me. Never again! There are better shops in Northbrook and Orleans; I'll spend my money there.

Wow! VERY small store, not friendly AT ALL, and little selection. I drove all the way into the city because I had heard great things.......never again!
Even after a $70 purchase, the girl said, "Do you want a bag?" No, I'll just carry all this stuff down the street.
It was just plain NOT a good experience.

My first couple of visits I found one or two things I bought, felt it was a bit high-priced, but interesting yarns. Then didn't go for a while, but needed something they had and spent a bit more $$, which seemed to go down well. I like the store, and since it's fairly convenient for me to get to, will continue going there. No-one's been rude - I understand that they're there to do business, so if there's nothing I want on a particular day, I'd be happy to just walk out the door, no problem either way.

by leila on Thursday, Jul 15 2010 at 02:21AM CDT

I loved that store! I was greeted immediately as I walked it. The staff was über nice and helpful. Too bad they're a little overpriced compared to most yarn stores.

by magnuminparvo on Thursday, Jul 08 2010 at 03:31PM CDT

I visited this store this week when I was in Toronto and I loved it. The lady who served me was helpful and interested in having my business. The yarn selection is terrific, especially if you're looking for something out of the ordinary. I like that there is a number of non-mainstream Canadian yarns.

The only put-off was the difficulty finding parking in the neighbourhood - even on a Monday morning the street parking as well as the municipal lots were all full. One of the reasons we don't live in Toronto any more :-)

I took a dye worshop at LK and it was great. The dye area downstaris is really neat tidy. The instructor was very welcoming.

by scrappyknits on Sunday, Apr 19 2009 at 01:30PM CDT

Lovely little store - lots of unique yarns and accessories. I was not greeted when I walked into the store, but I am quite happy to be left alone to browse. I had a question, though, and was helped right away with a smile and warmth. I enjoyed my visit and will plan to return next time I'm in the area.

by lizknitknut on Thursday, Apr 09 2009 at 01:25AM CDT

I will be rushing in to see this store; sounds just like my kind of place. I prefer a simple greeting and then to be LEFT ALONE unless I ask for help. It's also exciting to hear that they have a great selection of sock yarn!

After having read the reviews above, I don't think it is worth the long trip for me to go to LK. I don't have the patience for rude shop owners or staff. For me it is not always about the price of yarn but also the service you receive.

by highcolour on Tuesday, Feb 24 2009 at 06:33PM CST

They're certainly not rude - nicest, most knowledgeable people.

by Anonymous on Tuesday, Feb 24 2009 at 06:27PM CST

i'm in love with the owner! and denny is jewel!

by Anonymous on Tuesday, Feb 24 2009 at 09:37AM CST

Snobby. Rude. Not worth the trip. It is possible to find sweet little yarn shops with high quality yanrs filled with lovely people. While this place is sweet with nice yarns, the latter smothers out these qualities.

The staff was wonderful the day I went in. I'd spent an entire day hitting up the LYS of Toronto, and although it was small, and I didn't think I was going to find anything I needed (just drool over the things I couldn't afford), I mentioned a project I had been trying to find yarn for, and she immediately led me to wonderful, incredibly well priced yarn that I hadn't even noticed!

I think I went in on a bad day. The ladies were all sitting around knitting. I felt completely ignored. But the lady who served me was lovely.

went this past weekend, and found it to be a lovely little store. Had a hard time deciding which colour of STR to get, ended up getting the 2 that I'd narrowed it down to. Didn't find it snobby or unfriendly. I was greeted, and then allowed to browse in peace until I was ready to purchase(which I really like being able to do). Not a huge selection of different yarns, but very high quality, beautiful things.

by Robbie on Tuesday, Sep 30 2008 at 05:03AM CDT

I like this store alot. The staff have been nice to me both times I have been there, and always asked me questions about what I am working on.

(I always knit while I walk, so whenever I enter a yarn store, I'm finishing a row to put it in my pocket or bag...)

I do agree they are a bit pricey, but they don't tend to carry low-end brands - instead they seem to focus on higher end, natural fibres and if that's what you want, the price will be the same roughly wherever you go.

Definitely worth a visit in my opinion, as they have some of the most interesting sock yarns!

by Anonymous on Wednesday, Sep 17 2008 at 09:11AM CDT

Wow, I thought it was just me that thought I got "attitude" when I went in. I'm not going back!

by Anonymous on Thursday, Sep 11 2008 at 08:59PM CDT

Fabulous collection of yarns and colours. Just go and pick up your yarn and walk out.

Horrible staff - attitude, service. Dont ask them for help. They're not interested in helping simply selling.

by neeuqdrazil on Monday, Sep 08 2008 at 01:46PM CDT

LK is a lovely little shop, and if you go in when they're not busy, I've found the staff to be very helpful. However, when they're busy (weekends in particular), I think they get a bit overwhelmed, which can make it feel rather cold and snobby. They have a fantastic selection of sock yarns, including Blue Moon Socks that Rock. Their selection of other yarn isn't extensive - it's a tiny little shop.

by Anonymous on Friday, Sep 05 2008 at 12:18PM CDT

I love the store despite the snobby attitude from the staff. The selection is wonderful though a little expensive. It is a small shop but its worth visiting the store.

by jknitz on Saturday, Jun 21 2008 at 03:31PM CDT

snobby, snobby, snobby. snoby, insecure staff & clients. totally yarn & knit snobs, bad energy! also, yarns are all really expensive, no deals here.

by brella on Saturday, Jun 21 2008 at 06:52AM CDT

Fine natural yarn selection in a cozy space, fun neighborhood, easy to access by local transit and close to many other cultural/shopping attractions. Haven't found the staff snobby; they always greet me and then leave me alone until I ask them for something. Frequented by the Yarn Harlot of knit-blog fame.

by irie on Friday, Feb 22 2008 at 10:25AM CST

I love the selection, the stitch markers, fridge magnets, etc. I was also super-excited by my Julia Stiles sighting in the summer:) The space is very tight though & I agree with other posts about the service not being warm or fuzzy. I have been ignored many a time by LK staff...

by Anonymous on Monday, Feb 11 2008 at 05:10PM CST

I also love the selection at Lettuce and I also found the owner "snobby'. Still like the store though.

by Anonymous on Thursday, Jan 31 2008 at 04:38PM CST

I love the selection, however the owner is a bit stand offish and snobby.

by sar on Friday, Jan 25 2008 at 06:15AM CST

I LOVE Lettuce. They have one of the best selections in town, and it doesnt hurt that they're located in Kensington Market, which you can always find an excuse to spend some time poking around in.

by LD on Sunday, Jan 20 2008 at 06:29AM CST

LK has a wonderful selection but I find the staff a bit distant.

by Draya on Saturday, Jan 12 2008 at 03:04PM CST

Lettuce Knit is my favourite store in the city. Good selection of yarns that you might not find elsewhere - Socks that Rock, Blue Sky Alpacas, Fleece Artist/Handmaiden, Lorna's Laces. Friendly staff and they offer great classes too.

by Charlotte Ashley on Tuesday, Sep 18 2007 at 05:45PM CDT

I adore this place - I only go elsewhere if they genuinely don't have anything I can use (which is not very often - mainly it happens when they're sold out of a size of needles!) The fibers are all-natural with lots of variety, and the place is always packed with other knitters chatting and stitching. :)

by Anonymous on Monday, Sep 10 2007 at 01:55PM CDT

My favourite yarn store in Toronto! All natural fibres, top quality needles, bags, roving, books and more. The service is absolutely excellent. For a tourist it's a must-see because it's in a great neighbourhood - Kensington Market. Lots to do and see.
