As others have noted, Clegs is a fabric shop but the knitting section (just inside the front door) seems to be getting more permanent in the last few years.

They carry a good selection of straight and circular needles (Addi, Clover, plus basic Australian brands). Pattern books and leaflets are mostly from commercial brands such as Patons and Cleckheaton, but they also have some Rowan books and magazines.

The yarn selection includes standard Australian brands such as Patons and Cleckheaton, some New Zealand brands such as Naturally, a few European brands such as Katia and Schoeller and Stahl, and some Rowan. Stock of the less common brands is limited, so you may see the same sock yarn sitting on the shelf every time you visit for a year! There is a small selection of luxury yarns such as kid mohair or silk.

There is not much in the way of interesting Australian yarn, but that's not really their fault given that there isn't much about. Staff are helpful.

I was surprised at how much yarn there was as I understood it to be more of a fabric shop. There were a few that I thought about purchasing, however, it was pretty expensive. Not much in the way of local stuff, no local hand dyed etc. Patons, Rowan, quite a bit of cotton...

Minimal selection, no unique or local yarns. Okay for wools, pretty good collection of mohair. They carry a collection of New Zealand quill DPNs that are very cool and make a good knitting-souvenir for tourists.

A great place for travelers due to its close proximity to Flinders Street Station and hotels in the CBD.
I like it for its modest but selective collection of New Zealand yarns -- good for gifts for other knitters.
And on Fridays there are reps from Patons available for tips on knitting and crochet.
Word of warning: be sure you go during the Melbourne winter. Once September arrives, it's racing carnival season and the yarns are moved into a tiny area to make room for millinery accessories.

They are really a fabric shop (a brilliant one), but cashed in on the knitting thing. They've just got in a whole lot of Rowan summer yarns and have a good range of other things. It is slightly expensive, but the one I go to most frequently because it is easy to get to. They have a basic range of needles, hooks and notions. They have a couple of luxury yarns.
