Beehive is the main LYS for the Greater Victoria area. Nestled in a pink Freemason building on the edge of the down town core, this shop focuses primarily on knitting and yarn. They do occasionally carry prepared spinning fibers. It is not the most affordable shop around, nor the friendliest; but they do have a great selection and are easily accessible.

I was just there this past week. We found the staff to be very helpful. And the selection of yarn is amazing. They made sure to point out the number of local yarns that they carry, in addition to the brands we all recognize. I wish I'd had more money and room in my suitcase! What a gem of a store.

My favourite yarn shop.

Fantastic selection of wool. Poor customer service. I looked around (I received no greeting). Today, three staff were grouped together having a conversation. I had to interrupt their conversation and ask for help. I received help, with attitude... after I was hen pecked about crocheting and not knitting a pattern. Staff were very condescending and rude. I left without purchasing anything. This has happened quite a few times in the last year, that was the last time. I won't return again.

Lost sales today $60 + dollars, next week and the week after... it adds up. If you are in the business of selling wool, perhaps you should try and sell the wool with a smile.

Lovely store ... staff very friendly and helpful. I try to purchase locally dyed/spun yarn when I travel and they had a wonderful selection. Stopped in once, had to go back a couple days later. I wish I lived closer!

Visited this yarn store while on vacation in Victoria. What a disappointment! While I am sure they have a womderful selection of yarns, their customer service was atrocious. Knowing what I wanted, I immediately went to the sales clerk behind the cash register, where I was met with a glowering frown and an irritated "yes?". She was completely unhelpful, pointing the general direction for what I was looking for. The other women in the shop would stop talking at glare as you walked past. Needless to say, I did not purchase anything, and I will not be back.

Visting from Vancouver and was really looking forward to coming to the store. Lots of yarn to choose from but was very disappointed with the unhelpful staff. There were at least 3 staff that I see. Not one hello or can I help you. I wasn't in the store for 5 minutes. I was there for over 30 minutes! Very disappointed.

This is a big store with lots of yarn, but they have the LEAST helpful staff.

Loved this place! Didn't buy anything though as I was spending too much money on my trip. But must have had 3 ladies offer to help me, they told me if I buy a skein they will wind it into a ball for me, it was a place that I definitely wanted to go to a knit night!!! Would go back for sure!!

Was visiting from Australia (June 2010) and just by chance saw this yarn store from the bus window. What a gem and how lucky Victoria is to have this LYS. The atmosphere, selection of yarn and staff were amoung the best. Pity it's on the other side of the world. Although I didn't purchase the staff were certainly lovely and I didn't experience any rudeness

This is the biggest yarn store in Victoria. It has a large selection of a wide variety of yarns, though not much from independent dyers. Despite the selection, this is not my favorite store. Staff can come across as a bit rude and can, intentionally or not, make you feel stupid (that could be me - I am quiet and shy). On the upside it is the only place in town (that I know of) that stocks Handmaiden and Fleece Artist.

by knitbit on Sunday, Nov 14 2010 at 01:05AM CST

Wonderful selection but as a couple of the other comments suggest the staff is very rude and not helpful at all. I would rather go to one of the other stores where I know I will be treated well.

A big selection. Well organized, lots of patterns, needles etc. Staff can come across as rude and make you feel like you are wasting their time. I would generally rather shop at one of the other stores where the staff are more friendly. But there is lots of yarn here that you can't get at other places in town.

This is the best wool shop I have ever been in, but the staff is rarely helpful - in fact one woman is so rude that I often re-think my options and shop elsewhere! I have looked uo patterns and yarn at this store, then ordered them from another, as I actually dread going in. Many friends have had the same experience there.
Good luck shopping here !
btw, I am in no way a new knitter, and never need help of a technical nature, just need info about availability/volume of yarn etc.

Absolutely a fantastic collection of yarn. Frustrated with only one hank in each colour of Fleece artist and Handmaiden, but in general great patterns, and hours of wonderful yarn dreams.

by Samera on Friday, Nov 28 2008 at 11:08AM CST

Wow!! Loads of stock of every possible fibre and colour that one's little heart (and eyeballs) desire! Very accommodating and friendly staff and extremely encouraging if you have an 'idea' that needs a bit of development. I really enjoyed the fact that they have a 1-888 number for out-of-towners are willing to ship you yarn.

This is a great place with the yarns nicely laid out. Completed sample items are displayed along with patterns and books.
I've found that it is occasionally difficult to find help even during quiet times though. Most of the staff is knowledgeable and friendly although one or two of the staff do come across as unfriendly or impatient with newer knitters.

This is a very nice wool store, easy to find what you are looking for and with an area to look at patterns and books. What I liked the most is the colors, walls of colors.
