Sorry for the duplicate photos of Unwind Yarn. I didn't realize that one uploaded as 'anonymous'. Like this idea!!!

Hi Stacy -- This is a lovely idea and I'm pleased that Yarn Expressions is already listed. However, the information you show is many years old. How do I change the address, telephone number and add hours, etc.? Thanks!

Cool idea! Can I search within a mileage radius of a zip code?

by Stacy McDowell-King on Saturday, Sep 08 2007 at 11:06PM CDT

Meg, from your store's detail page select the Edit Me tab on the top right. From that page you can update all of the information as often as you like. All page edits are reviewed before being updated, so it may take a little bit before it shows up on the site (usually less than a day). Please feel free to update the notes or comments often with store specials or events.

Clumberknits, after entering the zip code in the search box, you can adjust the zoom on the map to show the radius you'd like search.

Aha, is this where I can ask questions about the site? This is a great idea - thanks for setting it up.

Here are my questions. My favorite yarn store in New York doesn't appear to be posted, but when I entered the info it said "Location appears to have been entered already." So I searched Sioux Falls, SD, and the map said there were no yarn stores there, but when I entered two new ones I got the same message, "Location appears to have been entered already." Is this a Mac thing?

Also - there are separate maps for "New York, NY" and "Manhattan, NY" (the same place), and they have different stores listed on them.

by Wendyzzzzz on Monday, Sep 10 2007 at 06:26AM CDT

As for things we like in a yarn store --- the options to pick from on the top left hand side of the page --- I think you should add something about the friendliness and/or helpfulness of the workers and/or owners. That, for me is THE biggest consideration of whether I would go back. And in NY, there are quite a few of those.

Thanks for this great site!

by knittinfiasco on Tuesday, Sep 11 2007 at 10:32AM CDT

That's not a mac thing. The map is very specific. If the LYS does not actually exist in the boundaries of a city, it'll be under that smaller city/town/village name (hit show all cities).

**The contest incentive can be a bad thing. I've found entries that are probably pulled from an older website that are not accurate--as in, LYS is CLOSED--for my area. :(

by Matt King on Tuesday, Sep 11 2007 at 11:57AM CDT

Hi all, I'm Matt and I helped built Knitmap.com. I'll try to answer a few questions about the site that have been asked here:

YanTanTethera: There are a few people like you entering stores and getting a 'Location appears to have been entered already' message. Well, the reason is that when we first opened the site we entered as many yarn stores as we could find from lots of online sources, so we may currently have some outdated information on the site. Some stores don't exist anymore, or have been re-named and still exist at the same location. If the store has been re-named, when you try to enter a location at the same address, the site will think it is a duplicate entry. The best way to get around it is to look up the address on the map and see if location is there, and if it is, update that location and change the name (as well any other information that needs to change).

knittinfiasco: Your question is partially answered above. Any information you see on the site could have been entered by us from an outdated source. But that's why we are opening up the site to allow anyone to add or update locations. I believe the knitting community has a lot of integrity, so I think that people entering bad information to win some prizes won't be a problem. However, before we do send out prizes, we will try to verify all the entries to make sure (it's only fair!). So if you see any stores that are closed or re-named, by all means either update it or write "store has closed" in the notes and we will delete it from our list.

Wendyzzzzz: Great idea! Anyone can currently rate locations based on Service, Atmosphere and Selection. We will look into allowing users to only show locations that are meet the rating level they choose.

Thanks to everyone for the hard work so far. We're really excited to continue to expand the site with the most accurate information about yarn stores on the web...and it will all be because of the awesome knitting community that is helping out. We'll keep you posted!

Nice site! You and Matt did a great job. I posted information for Olga's Living with Art in Coudersport, PA, 16915...it's an extremely impressive yarn shop in a very rural area. Anyway, if I do a search for Coudersport, the shop shows up. If I do a search for 16915, it says there is not a yarn shop in the zip. I don't know if I entered something incorrectly or there is a bug of some sort--maybe the 4 digit suffix to the zip causes a problem? Anyway, thanks for this great site.

by Anonymous on Tuesday, Sep 11 2007 at 02:29PM CDT

Please disregard the comment above except for the good things I said about your site. The zip search works fine now. Thanks and take care.

by Anonymous on Tuesday, Sep 11 2007 at 11:06PM CDT

I have signed up, I have entered my shop's information seven or eight times and I am still not entered. I have tried the suggestions you made in an earlier blog. Can you help me? Lois Lloyd, Creative Corner, Inc. 332 Fifth Street, West Des Moines, IA 50265 515-255-+7262 or 800-277-8427 Open 10:00 to 5:00 Monday through Saturday.

by knittinfiasco on Wednesday, Sep 12 2007 at 12:41PM CDT

The system thinks there are about 20 Colorados. :P

by illiane on Wednesday, Sep 12 2007 at 01:29PM CDT

Could we possibly have a flag or a way to filter out 'chain' stores or franchises, such as Michaels / AC Moore, etc? Some folks might want to ONLY be able to see LYSs or at least be able to easily identify them.

by Matt King on Wednesday, Sep 12 2007 at 01:40PM CDT

IKE~: I'll add editing comments to my to-do list :-)

knittinfiasco: What do you mean there are 20 Colorados?

illiane: Good idea, we'll talk about how we'd go about doing that. Maybe just a checkbox that says "Chain Store"...

by knittinfiasco on Thursday, Sep 13 2007 at 10:53AM CDT

Click show all cities--there are random groups of COs on the list instead on one long one under CO.

by Matt King on Thursday, Sep 13 2007 at 04:14PM CDT

Aha! I found the problem and fixed it. Thanks for the tip knittinfiasco!

Is the iPhone / mobile browsing feature fully operational? I got an error today - granted I was not using an iPhone but was using a smartphone - the HTC 3125.

by Matt King on Monday, Sep 17 2007 at 10:49AM CDT

illiane: The mobile is only set up for the iPhone currently, we're working on a more universal mobile version that will be coming out very soon. We'll be sure to post here when it comes out!

Hello. Just chiming in to say fab idea. Thanks! If possible, I'd like to make a couple of suggestions 1) augment the LYS info and 2) make it simpler to contact the site owners.

1) Describe how store is organized: by colour, by weight, by manufacturer, or none of the above. It makes a difference in how you approach shopping in the store or if you tackle it at all. As an example, Chicago's Arcadia is organized by colour. Some people adore it, yet others find it hard to navigate.

2) Offer an "In the know" option. For instance, Chicago's Nina will squirrel away super sale yarn for frequent customers. San Francisco's ArtFibers used to have the *best* deals in the back room. Insider tips stuff that you can rotate out as it ages.

3) How about a simple Contact Us or Bug Report or Got An Idea? link...

Sorry about the mega post.

hello KnitMap team! GREAT idea. I love this site already. I do have one minor suggestion...if you could make the "opening time" menu on the details page include earlier options than 8 a.m., that would be great. (There is actually a yarn store that I frequent that opens at 6:30 during the week and 7 on weekends...I know, lucky us!)

by Matt King on Wednesday, Sep 19 2007 at 04:28PM CDT

Mary Beth: Have a shot at it, I've added in opening times back to 6am. Let me know if it works for you!

I'm looking for Yarn Theory in Bedford, VA. It doesn't show on the map and when I try to enter info, it says it's already entered. The address is 118 S. Bridge St. Bedford, VA 24523.
I'm sure it's open - I own it!
Thanks for all the hours you put into this!

If you haven't yet visited The Peace of Yarn in downtown Matthews, NC, you're missing a real treat! The location is ideal, but what' inside is even better. Besides having a most knowledgeable and friendly staff, the store itself is to die for! Clean, organized, everything in its place and inventory to meet a wide range of needs from economical yarns to fine fibers like silk and cashmere. I haven't been in the store when a staff member wasn't helping someone locate the perfect yarn for a specific project or when a staff member wasn't actually helping (hands-on) a customer with a knitted work of art in progress. This store stands out like a shining star among yarn shops! The reason? The owner, Cindy Amann, cares so much about the knitting community. She knows knitting is more than simply a hand craft ~ It's a way to connect with others, a way to express creativity, and a form of relaxing therapy! Cindy takes a personal interest in every individual who enters her store. Even the light, airy atmosphere of Peace makes you feel good! This is exactly what downtown Matthews needs. KNITTERS UNITE! and support THE PEACE OF YARN! Stop in to visit, and you'll find all I've written to be true.

Hi! Just found your site. Great work! Could you please add seating and classes to Wool & Wicker, Richmond, BC. We have been open 10 years and have the most variety in this area, and have offered many classes since opening. We have also expanded this year and have lots more room. We feature a large area organized by brands, and a smaller area organized by colour. As for experience, if knitters come in Tues to Sat, I am there, and have 20 years in the business. Thanks a bunch! Diane
