I agree with other users' comments about this shop, they WERE really friendly and helpful. What a cute shop! Although I am a knitter and a quilter, I was really on the hunt for new and interesting yarn this time around, so I was a tad disappointed... They didn't really have a large selection of yarns and they don't carry the Lantern Moon needles. I did find some unique yarn though, which was nice, but I didn't buy any needles. The atmosphere in the shop is very bright and cheery. It was a saturday when we drove through Birmingham, so there were a lot of people in the store asking for help. People were laughing and enjoying themselves, which was nice. If you get a chance, I recommend stopping by this shop!
I stopped by this shop on my way from Austin to Delaware with my husband in tow. They have a VERY large selection of yarns in this particular store, but very few needles. Since I typically decide on a project based on the yarn I find, this was a great store. Huge selection of yarn! The staff was a bit on the Southern stuffy side, which I didn't mind all that much. However, the shop's biggest downfall is that none of the yarn has prices... Instead, the customer is forced to look up each skein in a "price binder". I am really big on customer service, so I rated this store very low for that dis-service. The owner of the store explained that they do that because the yarn vendors change price so much that it is just more convenient for them that way. I'm sure other yarn stores have the same issue, but they don't put that burden on their customers... Anyway, they have a great selection of yarn that compensates for the inconvenience. I would go recommend checking out the store on your way through town. Its very close to I-20.
I passed through Shreveport with my husband on a Friday evening around Christmas this year. I had read all the reviews on Knitmap and was prepared to find some attitude in this store. However, I was disappointed to find that everyone was very cheerful and happy in this shop, so I'm not sure what the deal is with the reviews... Several ladies were drinking some wine for happy hour and knitting. It was very cozy and nice. They were all super helpful and even invited me to sit and knit with them. Nancy certainly didn't pull a gun on me!
Who knows what is happening with these reviews, but I really liked this shop. We stopped at four or five on our trip, and this was by far my favorite. They had some very unique yarns, were willing to help me with any knitting issues I was currently having, and they had the largest selection of Lantern Moon needles I've seen in one store! The store is small, so the yarn selection is small too.
Personally, like every one of us, Nancy probably has a bad day occasionally, which is probably where some of these bad reviews are coming from. Just give it a chance and I'm sure you won't be disappointed by this shop. It is excellent!

On a recent trip to Amsterdam, I found this store and wondered in to see their yarn selection. For one, its now called The Otherist, not Egg Mercantile. Secondly, they have about twenty skeins of yarn to choose from, so I only recommend this store if you're just looking to make a scarf.... Otherwise, there is a larger knit shop around the corner from them, but it has odd hours.
This store is AWESOME as a gift shop though! They have quite an interesting, eclectic selection in fact. I would definitely go back.

Nice selection of unique yarns, but it was sure hard to find the store! Although, now that I know where it is, I'll go back again.
