About KnitPicker

I'm a guy, and a knitting instructor's assistant. I am always cautious about how people will approach a male knitter. I am NOT shy about telling others about the good, the great, the bad, and the terrible places! :-)

about Fuzzy Wuzzy Yarns on Wed Oct 20 00:59:32 -0700 2010

I called to find out the store hours, and when she (Chris) answered the phone with an exasperated sigh, I asked if the store was open. "Sort of." No inflection, no human response, no explanation for this inappropriate answer. She then explained that she would be in for a while, and I could come by. I thought that was a good response. Not so much. When I arrived, explained that as someone who has never knitted before, I had to bring a project to a class I was going to the following day. She looked at my pattern and showed me what I "needed." HA! She spent the rest of the time berating her son, who was not working to her satisfaction, and she had to talk about him to us as we waited, looking uncomfortable. She sold me, (because I didn't know any better), extremely expensive yarn AND needles. When I arrived at class with the Rolls Royce of expensive circular needles, (THE most expensive available), and painfullly expensive yarn, my knitting teacher gasped. She asked "who did this to you?! You told her you are new to knitting? I feel like you were taken advantage of." I explained where I went. Five knitters in my class nodded knowingly, and we exchange stories all the time. Chris is abrasive, at best, and just looks overwhelmed by people walking in to her store. I like their spot, and their pricey inventory, but I just hate working with her. Unfortunately, she is impossible to avoid, and her attitude is horrible. I'm told her classes are just a waste of money, and that she treats people like they are stupid for not knowing how to do what she already does.

The musty smell is still there. The yarn is all discount yarn, (oddly, none of it was cheap... same brands as the big chains, and certainly not as cheap as they sell them, (wal-mart, Joann's, Hobby Lobby, Meijer, Michael's, etc). The owner was there, asked where my wife is, (imagine going to a hardware store and being asked what your husband wanted you to pick up), and was nice once I politely pointed out her mistake. It looks like an acrylic yarn museum. The yarn is sold in clear plastic bags, (found a couple with bugs in it). She just seemed like she's never left the store since 1972, poor dear. I felt sorry for her more than anything, but I didn't feel sorry enough to buy musty acrylic yarn for $2 more than I'd pay at the crafty megamart.

I agree with Anita5. Small store, not a huge selection... BUT. WONDERFUL owner. Knows what she is talking about, willing to help, honest to the point that she will talk you out of something expensive to ensure you have the right product. If I lived closer, I'd love to take a class with her. Small selection, but nice yarns. I make a regular trip to this store, and the Spice House. Definitely worth spending a few bucks on a good LYS.

Nice store, good selection, friendly, approachable staff. They weren't weirded out by a guy knitter. Prices were in line with other LYS in the area. I've heard about customer challenges in the past, but I've never seen them in action, and haven't heard of any recently. I like to shop here.
