about Yarn Barn on Sat Jul 11 03:09:31 -0500 2009

I had a wonderful experience when I went in with a friend and my infant daughter a couple of weeks ago. I went on a Saturday afternoon in the height of summer - it seemed like town was absolutely crazy during KU freshman orientation.

It couldn't have been a better experience.

I wanted to try out some spinning wheels because I'm interested in starting to spin, and the sales clerk that I encountered couldn't have been more polite, helpful or patient. She took down four wheels for me to try out, helped me out when I screwed up while drafting fiber, and gave me some great advice. She also told me that although they didn't have certain models available to try in which I was interested, one should feel free to call ahead to see what will be in the store and they will be happy to assemble a wheel if it's not already out on the sales floor. For what it's worth, I was sure I'd have to suck it up and spin some fiber from my miniscule stash while trying wheels - there was a big washtub full of fiber to try out free of charge!

Great selection of yarn, books, dyes and spinning supplies. I will definitely be back to try things out again.

What an awesome store - there was nifty fiber/yarn tucked away in every room. I didn't have time to browse patterns, but will have to do so next time! The staff were very helpful, friendly and chilled-out. Prices were competitive/comparable with online stores and my usual LYS.

The only non-five-star rating I would give would be to organization, where I would give three stars. Great selection of yarns, but it was somewhat difficult to casually browse because there didn't seem to be clear divisions of where a given weight or brand of yarn was, at least for what my needs were. I was looking through lace- and fingering-weight yarn and had to check multiple bins/racks in 2 rooms of the store where those weights were mixed together or side-by-side with worsted weight.

Amazing yarn store in downtown Carnation. Very helpful and friendly staff, great selection of unique/hard-to-find/local/very small-scale-production yarns, and extensive book and magazine section. Totally worth the 90-minute drive from my home north of Seattle, and I will definitely be back to visit when the occasion arises.
