The women who work there are fantastic, and extremely helpful! They are very happy to help you find or order any yarn you need. They have a very good and interesting selection of yarn. They have a sitting area where anyone can come and knit for hours, without obligation to buy anything. They also have a variety of classes to help people learn knitting, crochet, spinning, and other topics.

This place is a quilting store that just happens to have yarn. The employees there don't know much about yarn, and from what I've heard, they've been encouraged by knitters to carry other brands besides Lion and Red Heart (and others one can get from Hobby Lobby or Michaels), but nothing has ever come from it.

I agree with Darth Knitter. The dog was the first person to greet me at the door, and the owner(?) took a few minutes to acknowledge my existence. (To be fair, she was working with another customer, but a "Hi" would have been nice.). Their selection was very small. I'm sure they could order yarn for people. I barely was able to spend 5 minutes in there before I ran out of things to look at.
There was a sitting area with someone knitting there, but it was cluttered looking and not very welcoming.

I visited here recently, and was impressed with the store and its selection. There wasn't anything that stood out as a "must have it now" buy, but I'm sure if I lived in Chicago I would be frequenting it often.

I visited this store today, and was pleased with their selection. I'm sure if I lived in the area, I would be visiting this store often. The store owner greeted me as I came in, and was very nice in helping me find what I needed. She was eager to wind my yarn for me on her neat electric winder, and even gave me a free pen. (It said Ideal Images, so I think she just wanted to get rid of those. Still, it's a nice pen.) She also had a card that she could holepunch that said "Buy $100, get $10 off", which I'll keep in chance I'm ever in the area.

I wasn't immediately greeted by someone in the store, but at least it happened within the first five minutes. The woman who did eventually greet me was willing to point me in the right direction for how the store was organized.
I asked her if the selection of yarn that was in the front entrance way was clearance yarn, and she said yes. I explained to her that I wasn't sure, since it wasn't clearly marked. She told me, "It should be marked on each skein with a red marker." (Me) "Well, as someone who hasn't been in the store before, it wasn't clearly marked for me to know." "Well, *obviously* you haven't been in this store before!" I thought that was rude.
After having some yarn in my hand that I intended to purchase, they were nice enough with some advice as far as how much I might need for a project.
The store itself is rather large, and is stuffed with a lot of stock. I'm sure it would be nice to spend some more time here, if the people were a little less snooty.

The store is a nice sized store, and it felt a little bit empty in some spots. The selection is alright, but they had a nice variety of fibers, including a few brands I hadn't seen before. It was easy to find, and the employee there was very nice and knew a lot about her stock. I'd definitely like to stop back sometime if I'm in the area again.

After reading the comment chaos above, I was very interested in visiting to get my own opinion. The store was a little darker in lighting than I personally prefer (I like ridiculously bright lighting, so my opinion may not be the best to go off of), but it was still light enough to clearly see all the yarn. They have a huge selection of high quality yarn, and were very helpful in helping me find what I needed. If I didn't live 90 miles away, I would definitely hang out here in my free time. It was very cozy, and I'd love to visit again.

After seeing all the caps lock drama in the comments above, I was curious to see this store for myself. I was pleased to see the wide selection of yarns that they carried, although the lighting in the store was slightly dim. (I prefer overly bright rooms, so my opinion may not be valid for that.) The employees were super helpful in going out of their way to help me out, and were very pleasant. If I didn't live 90 miles away, I would definitely go here to hang out.

Beth is a super nice salesperson. She has a good variety of fiber, and knows about all of it. She has a nice variety of spinning wheels, and will let you try them all out. There are so many fun knicknacks around the store, it's easy to hang out there for a few hours and feel everything. I'm definately going to visit again when I need specific types of fiber for spinning.

Visiting the store from out of town, it wasn't bad. If I were to rate it on a scale of awesome to not awesome, it would probably end up in the middle. I wasn't super impressed with their selection, but they had a lot of variety and novelty yarns. I was sad there wasn't any cascade 220, or at least none that I could find. They had a lot of sample garments hanging around that were nicely labeled. The service was alright. They dind't hover over me while I was there, but when I sat down to knit a little at one of their sitting stations, I noticed that they didn't come and check in to see how I was doing (or what I was knitting, for that matter.) I would come back if I were in the area if it was an emergency and I needed yarn for a project, but there was nothing there I absolutely fell in love with.

This store is located in a building with a bunch of other stores, and is relatively small. They have the best selection of Malabrigo yarn I've ever seen, because the owner asks for anything they can send. The rest of the selection was hit and miss. There was a significant amount of stuff I had never seen before that was weird and wacky and interesting. (Glow in the dark yarn!) The woman there was a lot of fun to talk to as I browsed. I'd definitely visit if I was ever craving some Malabrigo.

I tried visiting this location, and I ended up at a house in a neighborhood. I was later told that this location closed. Can anyone confirm?
about Heckaman's Quilts & Yarns on Tue Feb 07 21:40:34 +0000 2012
Tiny store. I didn't feel particularly welcome coming in, met by a few older ladies. If I were to guess, I would have said they judged me for my age (18-24). That being said, their selection of yarn was small, but the variety was great. I was surprised by how many higher end brands they had (Cascade, Berroco, Universal Yarns, Noro, Knit One Crochet Two). They had one spinning wheel in stock (an Ashford Traveler), but it was in the box. They had two small bags of fiber for spinning. That was sad. It's nice that they apparently have been around so long, but I didn't feel welcome, and I'm not about to recommend this store to anyone in the area, especially with The Yarn Gourmet as a better option.
