about Erica's Craft & Sewing Center on Fri Sep 02 22:28:28 -0500 2011

This place is a quilting store that just happens to have yarn. The employees there don't know much about yarn, and from what I've heard, they've been encouraged by knitters to carry other brands besides Lion and Red Heart (and others one can get from Hobby Lobby or Michaels), but nothing has ever come from it.

about Red Purl on Fri Sep 02 22:34:12 -0500 2011

I agree with Darth Knitter. The dog was the first person to greet me at the door, and the owner(?) took a few minutes to acknowledge my existence. (To be fair, she was working with another customer, but a "Hi" would have been nice.). Their selection was very small. I'm sure they could order yarn for people. I barely was able to spend 5 minutes in there before I ran out of things to look at.

There was a sitting area with someone knitting there, but it was cluttered looking and not very welcoming.

about Yarnify! on Fri Sep 02 22:38:59 -0500 2011

I visited here recently, and was impressed with the store and its selection. There wasn't anything that stood out as a "must have it now" buy, but I'm sure if I lived in Chicago I would be frequenting it often.

about Yarn Den/Ideal Images on Sat Sep 03 21:48:57 -0500 2011

I visited this store today, and was pleased with their selection. I'm sure if I lived in the area, I would be visiting this store often. The store owner greeted me as I came in, and was very nice in helping me find what I needed. She was eager to wind my yarn for me on her neat electric winder, and even gave me a free pen. (It said Ideal Images, so I think she just wanted to get rid of those. Still, it's a nice pen.) She also had a card that she could holepunch that said "Buy $100, get $10 off", which I'll keep in chance I'm ever in the area.

about Stitching Memories on Sat Sep 03 22:35:41 -0500 2011

I wasn't immediately greeted by someone in the store, but at least it happened within the first five minutes. The woman who did eventually greet me was willing to point me in the right direction for how the store was organized.

I asked her if the selection of yarn that was in the front entrance way was clearance yarn, and she said yes. I explained to her that I wasn't sure, since it wasn't clearly marked. She told me, "It should be marked on each skein with a red marker." (Me) "Well, as someone who hasn't been in the store before, it wasn't clearly marked for me to know." "Well, *obviously* you haven't been in this store before!" I thought that was rude.

After having some yarn in my hand that I intended to purchase, they were nice enough with some advice as far as how much I might need for a project.

The store itself is rather large, and is stuffed with a lot of stock. I'm sure it would be nice to spend some more time here, if the people were a little less snooty.

about Needle in a Haystack on Mon Sep 19 02:00:23 -0500 2011

The store is a nice sized store, and it felt a little bit empty in some spots. The selection is alright, but they had a nice variety of fibers, including a few brands I hadn't seen before. It was easy to find, and the employee there was very nice and knew a lot about her stock. I'd definitely like to stop back sometime if I'm in the area again.

about Your Local Yarn Shop on Fri Dec 30 01:50:20 -0600 2011

After seeing all the caps lock drama in the comments above, I was curious to see this store for myself. I was pleased to see the wide selection of yarns that they carried, although the lighting in the store was slightly dim. (I prefer overly bright rooms, so my opinion may not be valid for that.) The employees were super helpful in going out of their way to help me out, and were very pleasant. If I didn't live 90 miles away, I would definitely go here to hang out.

about Spinning Loft on Sat Feb 04 19:25:22 -0600 2012

Beth is a super nice salesperson. She has a good variety of fiber, and knows about all of it. She has a nice variety of spinning wheels, and will let you try them all out. There are so many fun knicknacks around the store, it's easy to hang out there for a few hours and feel everything. I'm definately going to visit again when I need specific types of fiber for spinning.

about Busy Hands on Tue Feb 07 21:07:54 -0600 2012

This store is located in a building with a bunch of other stores, and is relatively small. They have the best selection of Malabrigo yarn I've ever seen, because the owner asks for anything they can send. The rest of the selection was hit and miss. There was a significant amount of stuff I had never seen before that was weird and wacky and interesting. (Glow in the dark yarn!) The woman there was a lot of fun to talk to as I browsed. I'd definitely visit if I was ever craving some Malabrigo.

about The Knitting Den on Tue Feb 07 21:11:38 -0600 2012

I tried visiting this location, and I ended up at a house in a neighborhood. I was later told that this location closed. Can anyone confirm?

about Heckaman's Quilts & Yarns on Tue Feb 07 21:40:34 -0600 2012

Tiny store. I didn't feel particularly welcome coming in, met by a few older ladies. If I were to guess, I would have said they judged me for my age (18-24). That being said, their selection of yarn was small, but the variety was great. I was surprised by how many higher end brands they had (Cascade, Berroco, Universal Yarns, Noro, Knit One Crochet Two). They had one spinning wheel in stock (an Ashford Traveler), but it was in the box. They had two small bags of fiber for spinning. That was sad. It's nice that they apparently have been around so long, but I didn't feel welcome, and I'm not about to recommend this store to anyone in the area, especially with The Yarn Gourmet as a better option.

about Great Balls of YARN! on Mon Apr 22 18:24:34 -0500 2013

This particular store seems to be closed. Visited today and saw the store was empty.

about Just Imaginknit on Wed Apr 24 00:54:11 -0500 2013

Small store stuffed with yarn, which I would rather have than a small store with sparse amounts of yarn. When I visited, there were a lot of nice women seated around the table in the center, which made it feel even more cramped. The yarn selection was alright, a lot of novelty yarns with a fewer higher quality yarns available.

about Great Balls of YARN! on Wed Apr 24 00:59:04 -0500 2013

This store is spacious and filled with yarn. The yarn is sorted by color, which is visually appealing, however rather impractical. The staff at the time were very nice, but did not know the stock very well, and had a hard time finding a yarn I liked in other colors. The selection of yarn was pretty great - a broad range of novelty yarns to high quality hand painted blends. Sadly their stock of hand dyed blends was a little short; they had a lot of Malabrigo and some Tosh left. (But really, that stuff sells fast!) They also had a pleasant amount of books and patterns neatly organized.

about Silk Weaving Studio on Wed Oct 09 05:08:00 -0500 2013

The selection of silk yarns were fantastic and reasonably priced. They had a huge variety that included blends with wool, linen, and camel. They offered roving and had cocoons available for purchase, as well as a few displays of the different stages of silk worms. For those interested in other gifts, their woven scarves and other garments were luxurious.

about Dressew Supply Ltd on Thu Oct 10 03:29:52 -0500 2013

Huge fabric store with related notions and a crummy supply of Red Heart. Would go there in a heartbeat for buttons, as they had an entire wall of them.

about Wool Is Not Enough on Thu Oct 10 03:32:15 -0500 2013

Fantastic store with a good supply of high quality yarns, both local and more well known. A little short stocked on knitting needles and crochet hooks. The owner was a delight to talk with. Two adorable and friendly cats live there, so people with allergies beware.

about Alli Mae's Fibernation LLC on Sun May 25 15:57:43 -0500 2014

Alli Mae's has a decent selection of great quality yarn, and a limited supply of notions. The important thing to know about them is that they're attached to Ann Marie's Gifts and Home Decor, which is a great combination, but it can be confusing to initially find. They have a nice little seating area in which you can sit and relax for a while.

about Woven Art on Mon Oct 13 05:29:14 -0500 2014

This is a lovely shop - A huge selection and variety of different types of yarns. They also know their weaving stuff, and have a relatively large section devoted to spinning as well. The staff were lovely to talk to.

about Needle Craft World on Tue Dec 30 19:23:48 -0600 2014

IF YOU HAVE NEVER VISITED THIS STORE PLEASE NOTE: Store sign is listed as "Stitch-X", not Needle Craft World.

Although I was a little disappointed at the selection (they did not currently have any local yarns in stock for us tourists), I'd be pretty happy with this as a local yarn store. Their selection offers a lot of basic options in lots of different colors. If you went in looking for a yarn for a specific project, you'd probably be able to find it. The yarn was in the center area of the building, surrounded by other needlework crafts. Cathy, the owner, was a delight to talk to. The seating area within the store is a table, and I'm not sure how comfortable I'd be hanging out for longer periods of time (as compared to a couch).

about Rêverie Yarn, Décor & Gifts on Sun Apr 12 17:04:10 -0500 2015

This is a lovely store owned by 7 or 8 women. It has a great selection of yarn ranging from acrylics to silks and occasionally a bit of roving for spinning. Even though it's 45 minutes away from home, it's what I consider my local yarn store as they have enough in stock for any type of project I might want to make.

about Knit & Stitch on Tue Apr 21 19:13:59 -0500 2015

As stated, the table in the middle of the store creates a difficult problem navigating. I was happy to find a few local brands as well as special colorways made specifically for the store. The walls were stuffed with lots of different yarn, it's just too bad I felt hindered to look at all of it.

about Just Imaginknit on Wed Apr 22 10:58:35 -0500 2015

Updated review: I visited again, and they seemed to have a better range of yarns. It still felt cramped and none of the yarn had the prices labeled. They haven't updated their social media in a while, so it's nice to see they're still actually open.
