This is the closest yarn store to where I live, and the one I go to least. I know there are people who love this store, but I find the vibe to be very unwelcoming. Almost a "why did you bother coming in here" attitude if you want to look around, and the yarn is not especially well organized or extensive in terms of selection.

This store is packed with interesting yarn. They have lots of sock yarn, including from a few indie dyers and hard-to-find companies. They also carry Louet yarn, which can be somewhat hard to find. Their selection in all categories is outstanding and their prices are fair. Staff is helpful without being insistent.

I think loop is a great yarn store for high end yarns. Every skein in the store seems to have been chosen with care. They have many cashmere or cashmere blend yarns, including Sauveterre. The salesperson told me they are one of only 5 US distributors of this yarn. Certainly I have not seen it in a LYS before. Even the yarns that you can find elsewhere, like Koigu, are so abundant and beautiful here (a whole wall of Koigu) that it seems that someone must choose to stock each one. The prices are completely standard for the yarns they carry. The staff is nice, and the ability to get your yarn wound into a cake before you leave is appreciated. They have a very nifty electric ball winder. I wish that I lived in Philadelphia so that this could be my LYS!

Rosie's has very friendly staff, and a big selection crammed into a tiny space. The space is the drawback, in my opinion. Rosie's is a few cozy basement rooms, with yarn to the ceiling. If there are more than 2 other customers it gets hard to move, and it is hard to see all the yarn, or take one down from the shelf. They do have a broad range of yarns, not all high end, and what they have is very nice. They also have some spinning fibers from Black Bunny Fibers.

Vagabond is actually a clothing store with a few yarns out back. Among the clothing is some hand knit things, including some lovely caps from Italy ($40). However, this is not a yarn destination at all. The yarn is pretty sad and random - lopi lite next to cashmere blends, and lamb's pride and manos, mostly in neutral (remaindered?) colors. It looks like an afterthought out back.

The staff person at Sophie's was the most helpful, nicest person! Unfortunately the stock was rather low on the day I stopped in, so it was hard to get a sense of the store. They did have lots of Adirondack Yarn Co. yarns, and lots of various Cascade Yarns, including a nice selection of Madil Kid Seta. It also looked very comfortable, with many pattern books and a nice work space. I did not see any spinning supplies when I was there in October 2007.
