I'm a Knitch regular -- it is truly my home away from home. I'd rather knit there--and shop there--than anywhere. It has spoiled me for all other yarn shops. I used to get so excited to seek out yarn stores in cities that I visited. Now, I'm just sure that they're not going to compare (I still go, of course). Kim, Nell, Stephanie, Lois, Marissa, June, Judith--and all the staff--are some of the nicest people you'll ever meet anywhere. They have exquisite taste in yarn, and are always there to help. And they're always having so much fun--it must be being around all that fabulous fiber that puts them in such good moods. Find your way to Knitch and you will find yourself in knitting heaven.
This is where I learned to knit 7 years ago-- and while I'm no longer living in NYC -- I still have a fond place in my heart for Jordana, Julie and Petra. If you're not from NY, it may seem odd to get buzzed in and climb up a flight of steep, poorly-pitched stairs to get to your destination. But that never bothered me. I credit Jordana, who is the one who taught me how to knit, for empowering me to make whatever I wanted as my first project. She taught me to knit, an hour later, how to purl. I asked if I had to make a scarf, and she asked me what I wanted to make. I ended up making a striped baby cardigan, carrying two strands of different yarns throughout, with a crocheted border. You'd never know looking at it that it was a first project. The staff helped me through each step as I got to it. I always stop in when I'm visiting NY now, and get my Yarn Co fix with Julie and Jordana's books--the Yarn Girl guides. It's worth climbing the stairs.
