Errr... I worked in retail for 5 years (before movin' on up; it's not uncommon to place items temporarily on sale. Every retail store that sells goods of any kind does this (some more often than others).
So no, it isn't strange. Simply a misunderstanding on your part.

It's Pasadena, parking is horrible where ever you go, but I do agree that the service here is a bit too pushy. I don't like it when someone tries to sell me on everything skein I touch.
I hate the sterile atmosphere. I don't like the silence or the glaring florescent lights. It's awkward when I can hear tummy rumbling that are not my own.
The price is a little high, but it's due to the location. Rent is high in that city.
I come here from time to time because it's the closest yarn store to me (walking distance). Though, I usually make the effort to go to Abuelita's in South Pasadena instead.

The yarn selection isn't large, but what they do have does satisfy. I don't recall seeing much in novelty as someone previously mentioned, but what they did have in that was high quality (think Tilli Thomas) and expensive.
The yarn is relegated around the entrance and the rest of the store is dedicated to embroidery and gift trinkets.
Can't say too much on the service, seeing as I didn't need any help, but at the register, as I made my purchase, the lady was very pleasant.
A word to the wise: Unless you're in a store that has to meet sales goals, ask for help when you need it. As oppose to waiting to be asked if you need it. Don't be afraid to engage the employees first. It's not terribly hard.
All together, I had a fine experience here.

Cramped, but pleasant environment. Friendly staff, but small selection of yarn. Call in advance to see if they have what you need.
I stop in when ever I'm in the area.

I find it hard to believe that anyone at this shop wasn't warm or friendly. In any case, contact the store owner and let her know if you feel you were ignored or mis-treated in any way.
This a wonderful yarn shop with an equally wonderful staff. They offer good, many, choices in yarns, and their collection is sizable enough for browsing.
This is one of my favorite yarn shops because they know well enough to leave me be as I shop, but still check in from time to time to see if I need any assistance.

Nice shop. Good selection. staff is friendly enough. Average yarn store.

Wonderful lady, the owner is. And while the store seems like a mess, it is organized. The shop owner just tried to cram as much yarn as she could into her small store space.
It's safe to say that this store has more yarn than many shops 10 times it's size. If you're looking for something specific, do your-self a favor and ask for help. She knows where everything is.
It's also fun to browse since she carries will carry lines of know brands sold in other countries.
It's a diamond in the rough. Definitely worth a go.
