Joanne, the owner of this lovely shop, taught a beginner's knitting class years ago, so I guess I can blame her for my passion. She stocks what she likes to use - Dale of Norway, Cascade, Debbie Bliss - but always is on hand to help you out if you are looking for a substitution. The "Pearls" bit of the name fits in with her other passion - beading.

I've only been to Tucker's once, but it was worth the trip. They had an extensive selection of yarns well past their "sell buy" date so if you are looking for yarns you know haven't been sold in a while, Tucker's is the place for you. My sister and I found several gems when we visited and some of the most uniquely "ugly beautiful" yarn yet. How I wish they had enough to make a cardi; alas, it became a purse.

If you are a bit claustrophobic, take your meds before you got into Purl. It is itsy-bitsy, but well worth the visit. The selection ranges from Blue Sky Alpaca to Habu and the service is fairly good. If you don't see enough of the yarn you want, chances are they have more in the basement storeroom so ask. After you finish with Purl, check out Purl Patchwork for a fabric fix and Once Upon a Tart for some well needed nourishment.

Since my first trip, they have added more chairs to the sitting area (nice for husbands or non-knitting friends), but the yarn is really what you are after. You can pick up cone after cone of yummy merino OR find specialty fibers (Camel? Defies explanation!) by the pound. The service was great both times; they even went so far as to take down my sister's name and volunteered to ship her more yarn if she didn't have enough when she purchased her camel for a shawl. She ran out . . . they shipped it out as stated. Nice in this day and age.

I found Habu very confusing. I wasn't sure what was for sale and what was being shipped out. However, it is worth a visit for the visual space and to see the variety of "yarns" available. How I wish I had the money to knit a whole shawl out of their silver yarn.

Keep an eye out for this shop or you might miss it. The shop has an extensive selection of yarns from around the world and their service is wonderful. My husband and I visited in June and I walked out with enough Wensleydale Long Wool yarn for a Shetland shawl. Worth a bit of a walk from the Vauxhall tube.

It's a cute little store in Kingly Court near the Carnaby Street area. The selection is about right for the size and they do have a wide variety of other craft items available for sale as well.

I've only visited Loop once and I wasn't as bowled over as I had hoped. For some reason, I expected more and was disappointed. There wasn't anything in stock that I would call special nor that I could buy some place else for the same price. I couldn't figure out how the stock was arranged, and I found I was talking myself into a purchase, which I never made.

I love this shop! Since finding this shop, we visit every time we are in London. It is worth the half mile walk from the nearest tube stop (or take the bus if you want). My husband usually waits outside or grabs a quick cup of coffee nearby since I am in the shop for a while. There is a wide variety of stock available, some relatively hard to find, and it is one of the few shops I've walked into and felt welcome be everyone - even the ladies sitting down for a sit and knit.

My sister lives in Columbus, so this is always a stop for us. There is an extensive selection of yarn, organized fairly efficiently. I bought enough Cascade 220 to make Ariann in August this year and they were very helpful in the selection.

One of the most bizarre stores I have ever been in. There is yarn every where, which can be a bit overwhelming. The owner may take you around personally (nice, but annoying) and she seems to pop in every so often. Ditto the others on the no credit card thing - very irksome.
