Some really nice yarns including Manos and Cascade 220 but I am often uncomfortable with the general atmosphere....staff can be off-putting.

I know the woman who posted the last comment. She has been barred from the shop and as recently as last week asked permission to return. It was denied. The decision not to go back is the shop's, not hers. This is a wonderful shop with beautiful yarn and occasionally badly behaved customers.

This is a good shop with good selection. Staff is not as warm as I like, but not bad.

I guess I count as biased, since I work at Woolwinders, but the reason I work there is because I loved the store even the very first time I went in! We have a lot of really great customers who step in to help others with project and yarn questions if the shop gets really busy, and I can honestly say that I've never been to a yarn store that has a more knowledgeable staff. Every one of our employees has an area of specialty, be it crochet, fair isle, felting, finishing, lace, etc., so there's a good chance that you can take a private lesson in whatever you want to. One thing that surprises people is that we have no acrylic or acrylic blends - it's only natural fibers - so some think our yarns are "expensive," but the truth is that even as the prices for the store have been going up, the owner has not been raising the prices for the customers.

I happened on this shop by accident. I spent a fair amount of money because the staff was interested enough to show me things that they liked. I will return when I am in the area. The gifts I made with my purchases were loved by moms and babies!

I finally visited this shop. It's better than I thought it would be. Everything's organized and neat, it was a nice atmosphere with plenty of room to sit and knit. The selection was okaaaayyyy...a lot of shelves were empty, or almost empty, maybe they're expecting a big order soon. And yes, the prices are higher, at least higher than the shops in the Howard County and Baltimore County areas. The one employee working was extremely helpful - she didn't help me but only b/c I didn't need/ask for it - and I didn't get the impression that she was overbearing. I would come here again,, when they have sales.

I have had an uneven experince with this shop. They have a very extensive selection of very high end yarn--great if you want to spend a lot of money on yarn. But I can see how that is the only way that shops stay in business, since cheap yarn buyers are probably going to the web anyway. Okay.

This store has a core group of knitters who hang out on a pretty regular basis. That's great if you are in the clique or it makes you feel welcome on the day you drop by, but it can also be off-putting since it does sort of feel like the cool kids are all hanging out at the table, and may not want you around. Not ideal.

The staff is very knowlegible about knitting techniques, yarn and their inventory, which I have benefitted from. But I have definitly gotten the hard sell here several times. The last time I was in I got it bad with some yarn that I was pretty dubious about--but wanted for a plane ride the next day. Once the store owner sniffed my timeline, she dug-in until I agreed to that yarn. But once I started knitting it--on the plane--I really hated it and, sure enough, had to go find another yarn store and spend even more money on yarn that actually worked for the project.

If you are in the clique, then this is clearly the best yarn store in the world. If you are not, then it's probably not.

Since these are all old reviews, I figured I'd leave my two cents. I am a new customer to Woolwinders as of a few months ago and I found the staff to be very friendly and helpful.

I've come in for sit n'stitch times and always felt welcome to sit at the table with whoever was there. I've seen people come into the shop with knitting they've messed up on and watched the staff fix mistakes at no charge, even when it was clear the yarn wasn't purchased from the store.

If you worry about feeling comfortable at Sit n'Stitch, don't. Just show up and plunk your butt down with whatever you're knitting. I'm a pretty shy person and I did just fine and have made some cool knitting buddies as a result. Alternatively, you could take one of the classes (I recommend Kathy's sock class!) to get to know people.

And yep, the yarn is pricey compared to ordering online. I order about 1/2 my yarn online and the other half from Woolwinders. I support them because I think they're a great little shop and I want to have them around for years to come. :-)
