This store is very cramped and small, which I didn't like. They also tend to carry way too much novelty yarn for my tastes and not enough solid-colored natural fibers. I didn't see much laceweight yarn, and they only had one kind of sock yarn (self-striping). I was disappointed. The ladies there are quite helpful, though.

A small store but they cram it full. Service is welcoming and will let you browse through their WALLS full of yarn & books. You may need a guide if you are looking for something specific. As blakdove said, there is a lot of novelty yarn, maybe half of their yarn is wool. As an avid sock knitter they had the basics and as the closest yarn shop to work (6 blocks) it's a good resource.

Overall the owner was very pleasant and she has a wonderful Russian woman working there who is very welcoming and friendly. If my husband hadn't asked, I would have thought she was the owner.
As others have said, they carry quite a lot of novelty yarn which doesn't suit my tastes. Most of the yarn is in bags, but it was clear that I was free to open bags and smoosh the yarn. Being in Chicago where spaces are small and expensive, I wasn't surprised at the tinyness of the store. However, I wish it had been better organized....it was a bit to messy with bins of yarn blocking shelves of other yarn.
My husband wasn't sure of what to make of some of the owner's comments about me being a "real knitter". I didn't think much of it until later, but I did notice that the ladies who were knitting were much friendlier when they found out I am an experienced knitter. Not that they were unfriendly at all....I just think they were more comfortable letting me look and didn't feel the need to explain/describe every yarn I touched.
All in all this was a nice little store that has the basics and also knowledgeable staff. I probably wouldn't go way out of my way to shop there, but would for sure stop in if I was close by again.

I did not get a friendly vibe at all from this place. Yes, it is cramped, but I have been in cramped LYSs before - that is not a deal breaker. I came in with a very specific request for a type of yarn. The ladies there did not seem to know their stock very well, or maybe they just didn't know me and so did not go out of their way to help me - they greeted several customers by name who came in while I was there. They ended up actually trying to convince me that I did not want what I said I wanted. After that I didn't spend much more time there.
Bottom line - this is an unfriendly store in an unfriendly part of town.

I went into this store on a whim, and I found the prices to be reasonable, and yes, the selection is mostly novelty yarn. My biggest complaint about the store was the way they treated me once they found out that I wasn't a knitter, but a crocheter. It was like that scene in MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING: "What, he don't eat no meat? I'll make lamb." I would go back to get some groovy, goofy yarn, in a half-off basket. But not a place I would go to stock my yarn bins.
