They have an wide assortment of yarn, books, needles and magazines, and carry a lot of needlework supplies, too. The women that work there are *amazingly* helpful. One of them told me she was 80-something and helped me understand circs! It's a bit crowded in the shop - the tables for classes are crammed up against the displays so that was awkward to shop around when a class was going on. Love the old wooden floors, but the shop could just use a wee bit of organizing and spiffy-ing up. Also not a part of town I'd want to be in after dark!

Olmos Park is one of the oldest and nicest neighborhoods in San Antonio. The Olmos Park Police station is across the street from the Yarn Barn. This is probably the ONLY part of town I WOULD want to be in after dark!

I went down there with some friends and was, well, amazed. Great store, great selection, unbelievably knowledgable staff, and notions of every kind and size. Lots of nice buttons, too.
The BOOKS are amazing ... it's more of an archive than anything else. They sell all they have, and you can find knitting books and compendiums all the way back to the turn of the century! I have never seen anything like it. Spectacular! A historian's delight, a fiber afficianado's dream.

This location will close on April 15 2008. Hopefully, they will relocate. The owner is leaving the business after 35 years.

Very Happy to say that The Yarn Barn has NOT closed. The store has changed owners and will relocate (not far from this location) the end of October. Wonderful yarn selection, great staff. The store has been rearranged and looks great - easy to navigate!

The Yarn Barn has moved to a fabulous new location! The address is 1615 McCullough, just about a mile and a half south of the old location. They now have more unusual yarns and a large selection of books. Great staff, very helpful!

was just there yesterday (3/27/10)! i find the new location to be friendlier. maybe it's just the staff. the 1st time i went there, it was at the old location and we were followed around by an employee (who still works at the new location....). my 6 foot 4 inch boyfriend must have looked like a shoplifter? he's been the new one once (i bring him with record stores...) and they weren't phased by him. they've gotten TONS of new yarns in which makes me happy! their now carrying Malabrigo sock yarn which makes them the only store (out of 2) in SA to be carrying it. i try to alternate between them and Yarnivore. they have a fancier selection of sock yarn here.

I always make it a point to visit an LYS when I'm on vacation and I'm glad that I stopped in this shop. They have a nice selection and the young woman working the register couldn't have been friendlier. I will definitely make a stop in this shop next time I'm visiting.

I try to visit LYSs when I travel. I didn't think I was going to make it to Yarn Barn, but had some extra time. I'm so glad I made it in. The staff was really friendly and I loved the cozy atmosphere of the store. The shop has a very wide selection of yarns (it's a lot larger than it looks from the outside!) and I was pleased to find many things that I'd have to otherwise order online. I would definitely make it a point to shop there again if I'm ever in the area.
