you wouldn't know it from driving or even walking by, but this shop is jam-packed with as much yarn as a store twice its size. a great local option.

I had a horrible experience. I found the ladies to be rude and snotty. Not helpful at all.

Very wide selection of quality yarns. Some of the staff can be a bit "stand-off-ish" (which may be interpreted as "rude") but I never let that stop me! I just continue browsing and expressing my charming self. A bit pricey... but a great selection of some really beautiful yarns. Usually there is a box or six (!) of sale yarns to rummage through. I was in there once to pick up some yarn for a winter weight chemo cap for my cousin. Apparently, none of the credit card machines in the downtown area were working and the owner, knowing me only from a few previous visits, told me to just pay her next time I was in Crystal Lake! That kind of customer service earns loyalty!

The first time I went to Sunflower Samplings wasn't a good experience. I figured it was just a bad day for the people working there and decided to go back to give them another chance 3 different times.
Yes, they have a lot of different yarns and other items, but the people working there are not friendly at all. No greeting when they see you, a lot of eye rolling at questions, no one was able to answer my questions when I called about the yarn, among other things.
Walking through the store makes you claustrophobic, is not kid friendly, the lighting sucks and the workers just ignore you.
I will not be going back to this shop and would not refer it to anyone else.

I will second the idea that the front of the store is deceiving. I thought for sure I was in the wrong place the first time I went, but then I found the back of the store.
I have never had a staff member roll their eyes at me, nor have they been out right rude. There was one who was more introverted and gave to the point answers, but not rude.
Many times I've gone in there and been greeted warmly, and even had fun discussions with random strangers, and the staff.
I will say that the back "maze" of yarn is probably one reason I love the store as you keep going and turning the corners and there's still more yarn. :D

Lived in Michigan for years, where there was a knit shop in every town surrounding me. This shop has the best selection of wonderful yummy yarns with each brand having the largest selection of colors I have seen. Promptly greeted and encouraged to browse, touch and an ask any questions... I had a great time exploring each nook and cranny which was well organized for such a small area..
