Notes
This shop offers comfy seating and a large class area. It is "kid friendly" due to a nice sitting area with toys and books. Staff is extremely knowledgeable with many years experience in cross stitch, needlepoint, knitting and crochet. Yarns, threads and needles for all of these (and various other) needle crafts are available. They offer "leathering" services for needlepoint items such as belts.

This is the store that started it all for me. They are excellent teachers, always make me feel welcome in the store. I wish it were roomier and had more places to just sit and knit.( I know that Amy wishes for the same) I will forever have a warm spot for Amy and Judy!!

Great selection of yarn, especially now that it's actually priced. Service depends on who is working, but some are a bit snooty. Nice variety of classes. Be sure to note they're closed on Monday.

I'VE BEEN BUYING FROM THE STITCH NICHE EVER SINCE IT OPENED AND HAVE NEVER HAD A BAD EXPERIENCE. BY PEGGY

Not friendly to adults OR children. The people I have encountered there seem to be of the mind that they are doing YOU a favor by being open (at completely random hours-days of the week). Their prices are high, above retail in many cases.
You are better off shopping at another yarn store.

I have to question the comment about the random hours - although they have recently gone to being closed on Sunday/Monday/Tuesday, their hours are clearly posted on the door.
Stitch Niche offers knitting, crochet, needlepoint, and cross stitch, but I have only used them for knitting. The classes are FABULOUS and the instructors truly want you to succeed and enjoy your knitting. Stitch Niche is a Lexington institution and I have never hesitated to recommend them to my friends.

Outstanding store where the staff is ALWAYS eager to help. Large selection fills every possible space. Staff is never "snooty" - they always have offered to help and then left me alone to look. Perhaps the other commenter needs more "handholding" - if that is the case, they will provide that service if you let them know you needs lots of hands on attention. Personally, I prefer to be left alone to browse the extensive selection and have help available when I am ready.

I agree with the use of "random" hours. They do not follow a regular business schedule so you have to be specifically aware of the hours before you go there. The staff I have encountered have been arrogant and, sometimes, down right rude. Lots of yarn but the prices are very high. I much prefer other yarn stores who are nicer to their customers, have better hours and don't price their yarn outrageously.

I like the Stitch Niche. It can definitely be overwhelming on your first visit and I did think the staff was more than a little standoffish. But once I asked a question they have been very helpful. Regarding their prices - good yarn is not cheap. I do not buy all my yard here. When I want the good stuff I shop at Stitch Niche.

I agree that the staff is occasionally standoffish, and the shop takes some getting used to (like finding the prices or brand of yarn on the sheet). Still, I have succumbed to the tactile joy of buying yarn in person, despite their prices. A decent store if you have the day off, but don't plan on sitting and knitting for long.

I have been amazed by how poor the service is at this store. I left once wondering if I should turn around and give them a head-up on how truly awful it is to be a customer there. On the way home I composed a letter in my head, which I never sent. Case in point: the woman at the desk spent 20 minutes consulting with a customer on cross-stitch thread colors. Meanwhile, as I stood behind the cross-stitcher, and two other customers stood behind me, we waited for someone to ring up our purchases. The message conveyed was that the more enjoyable task of talking about someone's project superseded the more boring, routine job of managing the cash register. There was no acknowledgment that people were waiting for checkout--for 20 minutes!! And when someone finally did wait on us, there were no apologies. I have stopped at this store many times because it is near my home, but I am annoyed every single time. The environment is like a coffee klatch of workers who appear inconvenienced by shoppers. I don't know what to make of the strange indifference (if not outright rude) attitude of the staff there.

I find this to be a confusing store, and the customer service is not very consistent. I'm rarely asked if I need any help, and sometimes the staff has been rude. But sometimes, they have been very nice and helpful. I do appreciate the time one employee took to work with me on floss colors for a complicated project. The shop itself is not well laid out (ie, all needles are at the far back end of the store, when all other cross stitch and needlepoint is at the very front), they carry only cotton floss, they offer very few non-yarn-based classes (nothing for an experienced stitcher), and they have very few people who can answer cross stitch and embroidery questions. But they're the only game in town besides big box craft stores... My boys do enjoy their kids area, but only b/c it is completely stocked with building bricks.

I went here for the first time today, and I was really overwhelmed. The store doesn;t seem to have a definite organization to it. I had to ask where to find everything I wanted to look at.
They stocked lots of yarns I have never heard of, which is fine, but due to that fact, I hated not having prices ON the yarns. Trying to look up prices, keep the yarn away from the baby, and see how much money I had was too difficult to bother with. I wound up just taking everything I liked to the register.
The staff was nice, but I feel like much of their product is overpriced. A good example of this is that across town I can get an Addi turbo lace needle for about $14 at another yarn shop, in this shop Addi's were at least $20 each, and a set of clover dpns (you know, the kind you can buy at hobby lobby?) were $16 a set. Way too high for me.
So I didn't buy any needles, and I wouldn't, unless I absolutely needed that needle right now and neither of the other 2 yarn shops in town had any.
I did buy 2 skeins of yarn, and I am happy with those, but having not known the price prior to going to checkout kept me from buying the third, at a whopping $35 for 100g of sock yarn.
SO I guess what I'm saying is, its a nice store and all, but its a but confusing to navigate, and the prices are too high for my liking. I will likely be going across town for my yarn purchases, and unless I can't find what I need, I will probably not shop here anymore.

Go to ReBelle on South Limestone, located in the same building as Sqecial Media (ReBelle is on the first floor in the space formerly occupied by Paisley Peacock). They have great yarn and are very friendly. Just ask!

They've always been really nice to me, and I love seeing all the different kinds of people the store attracts, experienced knitters, young college students, people who make big purchases, and people who make smaller purchases. Great store, logical layout.

Like the store, like the staff, like the stuff!!!
We all have our peculiarities about what type of customer service we would like to receive when shopping. Some folks like to have an employee hover over them every step of the way. Others like to be left alone while they wander through the wonderland of yarns and patterns and other supplies. Don't complain after the fact. Go get help when you want it. Don't hide behind the veil of an e-mail to air your dislikes or concerns. Take care of your issues while you are right there in the store. You might be speaking on behalf of others whow are in the store at the same time you are. At least Amy or the employee would know what they are doing that is not "appropriate customer service".
As for cost, Amy carries a wide variety of knitting yarns, many of which ARE expensive. They are also exotic, rare and I don't think they will be found in "the other stores across town or downtown". Remember that craft items are really no different than anything else we buy in life. I like to shop for things at Fresh Market. That's a cook's paradise (in my opinion); however, just about everything in that store is far more costly than any other grocery in town. If I choose to pay the extra money, I certainly don't complain about. If I don't like it, then I certainly can't blame the market itself or the management/owners. I just need to take myself to another grocery and pay the lesser price.
So, for my overall impression of A Stitch in Time review, I give it 2 thumbs up, 5 stars, and a big thank you for the large amount of inventory you carry in such a small amount of space. I always come to you first for what I think I might want, need, or hope to find. It is USUALLY a pleasant experience. If it isn't up to snuff, I just chalk it up to "someone isn't having the greatest day in her life" (don't we all have those days when we can't hide it from those around us?). The classes I have taken have been interesting, slow paced enough for this slow learner, and the instructors are always willing to help in between classes if someone is stuck on something between one session and the next.
PLEASE KEEP UP YOUR GOOD & HARD WORK. LOTS AND LOTS of us appreciate what you do.!

After reading these comments, I think I might just keep on going to another store. I have had my fill of rude and arrogant LYS employees. Too bad, I'm visiting from Florida and really need some good yarn. Hope the folks who run it read and pay attention to these comments, it might be the difference between success and failure.

Stitch Niche definitely has its perks--including a wider yarn selection than the other stores in town--and I've been pleased with the purchases I've made there. But I've had similar problems with customer service as many of the other commenters. I don't require hand-holding or hovering, but I do appreciate common courtesy. I often feel that my presence in the store is an affront to the workers in some way--whether because of my age, my appearance, or some other factor, I couldn't say. This is too common an occurrence to chalk up to someone having a bad day.
I encourage people to shop here, but I also encourage the staff/owners to strive for excellence in customer service.

Very difficult to shop here. Nothing has a price tag, you must look up prices on sheets hung on the displays. Yarn is organized in some strange way - not by brand, color, or weight. Staff couldn't tell me where things were. No idea how to shop their patterns - all mixed up and stuffed into rotating wire displays. Notions are in the very back - walk through the tables for classes and then you get to them. Odd. Staff seemed more interested in their own conversation than in helping the customers - not just me, but all that were in the store at the time.
Won't be shopping there again.

Agree with previous posts. Lack of prices on yarn is confusing and annoying. There appeared to be some order in terms of weight of yarn but it wasent logical. Selection is great but I prefer to shop somewhere a bit more organised
