I notice that several people have said that the owner is not friendly. I feel I need to weigh in with my experience. I seldom shop at Skeins because it is far from where I live, but I have called several times looking for specific yarn. I have found the owner to be exceptionally helpful. Once, after telling me that she did not have what I was looking for, she called me later that evening to say that she had looked in her personal stash when she got home and found what I wanted. I don't need the staff to hug me when I come in; I just want someone to take an interest in my project and make an effort to be helpful. Terry does that and I appreciate her excellent service.

I LOVE this shop! My son and I went there to find some yarn for a project. He started talking to the owner and one of the workers. They were so very nice to him. They explained some things to him that he wanted to know and even took down his number to let him know when some roving would be in for a craft project. Most shops would rather ignore a teenage boy - not this place. They were so kind. I will go back again and agaiin.

I have had good and bad experiences here. The owner is a bit prickly, but when helping me pick out a yarn, was very helpful and knowledgeable. I bought a circular needle that was taped to the cable with scotch tape. This so disappointed me that I haven't tried to go back and return it yet. I have no doubt they would replace it for me. I agree with others that the store is cluttered, every available space is covered.

Skeins has been 100% consistent in their willingness to help. The owner has an outstanding eye for color. She has helped me get gauge so the many sweaters I have knit actually fit. Her selection of buttons is grand as well. I have found this store to be the most helpful in the city.

I am a new knitter for 3 years now and drive by Skeins daily on my way home from work. I have stopped in about 3 times over the past 3 years and have been seriously disappointed in the lack of friendliness at this shop. For me this is a pleasant passtime and I wait to take my business when I go to Brainerd, "Among the Pines". They deserve it!

I just stopped into Skeins this afternoon. I was in there for almost 15 minutes and not once did the salespeople acknowledge my presence. They sat at a table and talked with two other women that were in there. I went in to the store intent on spending at least $100 for a few projects I've been thinking about, but I walked out empty handed after being completely ignored. At times I almost felt like I was intruding on the conversation hour of the other women there. Never again.

This shop is an old buisness, and looks a bit out of place in the newer strip mall. While there is a large variety of yarns in the store it is not easy to look around. Plus the store itself is small so there is not alot of space for the yarns themselves.
They do stock large amounts of some yarns so that you can make a larger projects.

All that aside the people working there were very rude and unprofessional. There were two that were working at the shop, and they would not leave their little knitting table until they were ready to check people out. I went at a busy time, and there were five people lined up at the register waiting while TWO people helped a lady find a ribbon for a childs hat. The lady then said" Oh I still need to look for..." and wondered off. WIth two at the register one could have been ringing up while one helped a customer. On top of that the lady working the register stopped what she was ringing up twice to answer the phone. And by answer I mean totally walk away in the middle of something else. They all just seemed annoyed that there were so many people in thier shop at all!

I will never go back.

I'm in the pacific northwest so I have plenty of yarn stores to choose from, yet whenever I visit my sis in minnesota I make a point to visit skeins. Maybe the owner isn't all chatty and chipper but I enjoy not having someone talking my ear off while I'm shopping, my brain is too busy thinking of patterns, colors, weights. She always goes out of her way to help when asked. I think she is great. The shop is full but that is one of my favorite things about it! I have stumbled on many a treasure! I will keep going back!!

I appreciate rolling my own yarn. It lets me know where there are kinks or knots. Sounds to me like some of the posters need to focus on someone else sometimes.

by Carol on Monday, Nov 29 2010 at 12:14PM CST

I have found the owner to be absolutely helpful. The selection of yarns are wonderful and she knows how to help you select a good yarn for your project as well as being so instructional as you set your gauge. "go to this point and come back." As a former teacher I truly appreciate her skills. The negative comments were when she was fighting for her life --- and won!!

I LOVE this store and drive 1 1/2 hours to shop there even though there are LYS closer! The owner has been kind and generous. She has an eye for color and will show you how to get the best bang for your buck by substituting a less expensive yarn. There is ALWAYS a sale in the back room... and to those of you who have "tripped" over boxes, try looking in them! They are full of specialty yarns at unbelievably low sale prices! I also love the fact that I don't have to special order my favorite needles. They are in stock at SKEINS... even though other yarns shops don't carry them. I can't wait to visit this shop again!

I moved here one year ago, and this shop is as well stocked and organized as most, and maybe better. It appeals to me because of all the natural fibers which are available here. The owner and all the staff have always greeted me and asked to be of assistance. If I don't need help, I am allowed to browse. All I can say to you unhappy customers is get over yourselves. The owner is talented. She explains patterns at my level. She also has a fabulous eye for color. Skeins is my go-to shop!

I have lived right down the street for over 2 years. I usually spend around $300-500 a year on yarn, and always have the intent to buy when I go into this store. However, whenever I go in, the owner is too busy to even acknowledge my presence. She is too busy having personal conversations on her cell phone or with a friend in the store.

So ~ I go down the street to COLDWATER COLLABORATIVE to spend my money.

I got lost looking for Brachin's bookstore. (Seriously lost-lol) I just happened along this store on my way to Lund's to get directions.

I wasn't able to buy any yarn from her, and at the time, her entire door was out-completely gone and the guy trying to fix it wasn't able to just then. Anyway, with all this going on -in August heat no less- they both (she & the door guy)were very nice. They tried to explain how to get to the bookstore.

I asked her about a sweater on the table, then had to let her know I wasn't able to afford the yarn, she was still very kind. No yarn snobbery.

I hope she had a good time at the theater that night. :-)

The incident I had happened when the owner was not ill.. I certainly would have understood had that been the case.

by Anonymous on Monday, Jan 11 2010 at 06:29PM CST

I have shopped this store for over twenty years and love it. Huge selection, with one skein of everything displayed, and inventory behind. The owner has an exceptional eye, and is very knowledgeable. The store can be busy at times because of this, but she does help as soon as she/staff can. Lots of inspiration and best quality for wide range of tastes and budgets. (Interestingly, most negative comments were dated when the owner was seriously ill.)

by mzbeebee on Monday, Jan 11 2010 at 06:18PM CST

I agree with the comments about rude service. I signed up for a crochet class and was ill and couldn't attend.. I called, and the owner was so rude I went anyway, sick and all! I was furious and let her know it. Very hard to shop at this place, no order to anything..

by Spookie on Wednesday, Aug 05 2009 at 03:08AM CDT

As the nearest LYS for me I've been to this store perhaps 6 times and been greeted with shockingly rude customer service 5 of them. I'll never go back.

by Toni on Monday, Jun 01 2009 at 09:52PM CDT

The hours are very inconvenient, though that's true of many yarn stores. The selection is odd - lots of novelty/artisan yarns, and some basics, though never in enough quantity to do anything with. The store is very difficult to navigate - stuff is piled everywhere, and the shop is dominated by a table in the middle, where the owner and 1 or 2 friends sit knitting and talking. They pretty much ignore all who enter the store except other friends, or folks they peg as an easy mark (e.g. easily talked into buying expensive items - well-off, but unknowledgeable new knitters). It's a VERY uncomfortable place to shop.

by ME on Monday, May 11 2009 at 11:47AM CDT

The hours are inconvenient, the staff is rude and the selection is small. I've shopped there twice because it's in the same shopping center as another store I go to and I refuse to go back. I bring my son (an infant) with me (I'm a stay at home mom so my son goes everywhere with me) and they couldn't get me out the door fast enough. That's perfectly fine with me, I want to go into a store and see yarn, not piles of boxes and clutter everywhere.

by Anonymous on Sunday, Mar 01 2009 at 08:49PM CST

Its my favorite yarn shop. The owner has always taken the time to help me and explain things that I need to know. She along with her help have gone out of their way to help me.I haave recieved the best help in this shop and look forward to shopping there. I can't say enough good about this shop.

by Anonymous on Monday, Nov 24 2008 at 12:48PM CST

I love this store. I am new to knitting, have been in the store multiple times, and have always had a great experience. The owner has helped me understand instructions and recommended alternative yarns. It can be busy and sometimes I've had to wait more than a couple of minutes for assistance but I don't mind because the expertise is well worth it.

by Anonymous on Wednesday, Sep 24 2008 at 12:46PM CDT

When I went here, it was probably 80 degrees in there! I could hardly shop because I was so HOT! The lady that was there was helpful. I have been there before and received good service, but the shop is crowded, and hard to navigate. If your looking for specialty yarn, there are a few other places that have a much bigger selection, and easier-to-shop atmosphere.

by pockafwye on Sunday, Sep 21 2008 at 08:39AM CDT

They have a decent selection of novelty yarns, and spendy you-wind-them-yourself artisan yarns. Store hours are short and inconvenient, customer service is intimidating at best most of the time. I occasionally buy a novelty button or needles there, or a skein or two of yarn for small projects, because it's near where I go for some other shopping.

by Anonymous on Saturday, Aug 30 2008 at 06:01PM CDT

I agree that the greeting and service there is NOT good ...especially by the owner...unless you know you want to buy something !! THe others seem to be friendly and helpful but I wouldn't go there unless I knew what I wanted and there was a good sale !

by Anonymous on Tuesday, Jul 29 2008 at 03:14PM CDT

I have 2 experiences in this horrible shop:
I went there once when I was first learning how to knit. I was a high school student, and was treated like it. I felt talked down to and age discriminated, and swore I'd never go there again.
10 years later, I figured maybe I'd give it another try. Still disappointed! I echo the comment above me in that it was crowded, things were covered, and it was not very well lit. The non-existent customer service, limited selection, and lack of atmosphere ensure that I will not give it another try, even if it manages to last another 10 years.

by Anonymous on Wednesday, Jul 02 2008 at 07:42AM CDT

This is an AWFUL shop. I had to push boxes out of the way to look at some yarn, and then I slipped on a plastic bag.
There was no place for me to put anything down as tables and registers were covered with yarn, boxes, books, etc.. It was horribly crowded and dark in this store.
I bought a $35.00 skein of yarn only to be told I would have to wind it myself!! I was the only customer in the store! I have been knitting for 20 years and NEVER have I had to wind my own yarn! I will never shop at this store again. There are other yarn shops close enough to drive to and this yarn shop doesn't have anything to distinguish it from any other shop.
Don't waste your time - go to another store to get the same yarn - and much better customer service.

by tangled on Thursday, Jun 05 2008 at 06:48PM CDT

I like the shop, too. They have an interesting selection of yarns, including great sock yarns. The owner has always been friendly and helpful when I've been there.

by fiberguy on Tuesday, Oct 30 2007 at 12:19PM CDT

I've heard several friends complain that the owner is at times brusque or bordering on rude, but I have never experienced this. Be sure to check out the sale room in back. I like the store and though it doesn't have an enormous selection, I will shop there again and again.
