How did anyone rate this a 4 instead of a 5??? I went in with no expectations because my son and his flatmate - his best friend since high school - recommended that I check it. I think it is a solid 5 on all scales.

When we arrived, the owner was in the restroom. I started looking around and immediately found a package that is not carried in my LYS. (I try to buy only items not found there to be supportive of my LYS at the same time I can support and explore other places.) -- Important note - Donna carries a vast supply of accessories and supplies, needles in all price ranges, and interesting "I don't need this tool, but I WANT it" for even the knitter who has everything, like me. (I could open a store myself with all of the stuff I have picked up over the years.....) Some I found by myself; some she shared after she came out..... -- When she came out, I startled her as she had not heard us come in (my husband and son wanted to "watch me have fun"!). Instead of annoyance, she displayed delight that we were there, even though she was so surprised. That alone deserved a good rating, because I think that people are their most honest personality when caught so completely off guard.

Then she started sharing her store with me in a way that was not all about her -- "me, I, me, I" -- but more about my interests. Not an easy feat, IMHO. She had some items that I was curious about, not in my LYS and I had read about but never seen. She was apologetic that one was dusty, having been hung high up so not easy to clean. She offered a 20% discount to rectify a little dust! I felt like a regular and valued customer the first visit just by this accommodation.

Donna - the owner I am talking about - did not push any item, but did answer every question enthusiastically. In an incredibly short time, I felt like I became part of her circle of crafters. I have been knitting and crafting since 1972, in Maine, New York and here in New Jersey. I have visited LYS in almost every state, including Alaska. (not Hawaii, couldn't find one there) I have rarely been in a store that made this much "sense" to me on the first visit. Not often does a store meet the needs of both the newest beginner (her classes, and her innate ability to teach that comes across to me, a retired teacher) and to an old hand in equal measure. Also, her store is perfect for knitters with youngsters. So often, children are bored and therefor become unruly. Here, there are crafts for kids. The parent can purchase a kit - all ages, both genders, all abilities - for the child/ren and then shop for his/her own craft needs.

Most telling - I recommended the store to the girlfriends of my son and his flatmate because the store is ageless. I have been in LYS that are so about being "hip" that I could not find a thing for me to purchase, or so about the 40+ group that I could not feel comfortable inviting the younger people in my life. This store seamlessly attracts both.

Please visit this store if you are in Chicago, no matter how short your visit may be.
