I went to check this store out a week or so ago, and quite frankly I was very disappointed. The store was under-stocked, with hardly any yarn to pick from. At first I thought that it was because they were new and had just opened, but then I discovered they've been open since 2005! The store also had too much empty space, and as a result felt cold and not cozy the way a yarn store should. Not to mention the employees were not very friendly, with not a single "hello" or "can I help you". Out of 10 I'd give this store a 2. I doubt that I'll ever go back.

I'm sad to see the other review because I've only ever had positive experiences at Make 1. The staff is friendly and helpful, and I feel like the store has tried to capture and create a COMMUNITY of knitters, and not just be a store that sells yarn. I can't rave enough about this place- and it's one of 2 of my favorite shops in town!

I love Make 1. Every time I'm in there it's positive. I've had so much help from all the staff and even the other customers. I'm still in my first year of knitting, and the encouragement I've received there has really helped me stay interested.

I had not seen the website before today and I read the first review with surprise and dismay. My wife and two of my daughters use the store frequently and I have never heard a negative comment. Many positive comments, no negatives. Strange comment. Disturbing. Maybe someone from down east??!!

Make 1 is a fabulous store! A lot of the yarn is on the expensive side (specialty and hard to find, hand-spun and dyed etc.) but the staff is incredibly helpful, even if you don't make a purchase! They have always welcomed me to come in with my existing projects for help, and looking in the window, the couches are often full of very content looking, chatting, knitters. I think the first reviewer must have been having a bad day, or had an anomaly of a visit.

I heard the store is closing and that's why there is no new stock. The owners are moving to Ontario and really don't care too much anymore - if you didnt buy it there, they aren't willing to help you - even ask you to leave the store.

Don't believe the last review. They are not closing and always have new stock. The owners are awesome and are willing to help you in any way. From what I heard is that someone was coming into the store EVERY DAY asking for help, but did not buy the yarn/material there. Understandable if they felt they did not want to help and would ask you to leave if you were not purchasing anything from them. Make 1 is a fabulous store and has a great atmosphere with amazing people.

I have been to the store a couple of times as I use to work close by. I have felt very unwelcomed at times particularly by one the owners, not both. I do find the atmosphere bleak and unkind. As well, the store has very little light and at times reminds me of a dank pub not a yarn store. I had very high hopes of taking classes there but I will look else where because of the one owner's attitude.

I had the same experience with the service. The owners and workers in the store are not very welcoming and do not appear eager to promote their business. I have shopped there a few times and had taken two classes. Now that I have a car I go to ShuttleWorks for all my spinning and knitting supplies. ShuttleWorks have a very good selection and great prices too.

So I thought I was the only one who hasn't had the best experience at this store. At first I thought it was just me because I've heard nothing but RAVE reviews for this place. I love the selection, but I've never felt welcomed by the so called "community" that this store is said to create. Maybe it's because I don't look like a "typical" knitter, I don't know. I do love the yarn there though, and it is a much nicer place than Pudding. But not by much.

I am the new owner, and I hope if you haven't been in for a while you will come in and let me know what you think of the changes. I am Bessthespinner on Ravelry, and we have a Make One Yarnies group on there, too. We specialize in nature fibres and try and support independent dyers as much as we can.

Went to this shop end of December 2009. I understand that it is under new ownership. I was mildly impressed with the selection, not so much with the owner unfortunately. I will not be revisiting this shop and my custom will go elsewhere.

This is the most comfortable, beautiful yarn shop in town and I've been to them all. I walked in on a Tuesday eve, it happened to be knit night, and found everyone there very friendly, welcoming and willing to answer my questions. The owner showed me around and was very helpful, saying they specialized in natural fibres. The service and classes available are great. One must keep in mind that how any store's staff treats you is influenced largely by how YOU communicate what it is you want. There's such a thing as a good customer too :)

I discovered Make One in December of 2009, about 6 months after the new owner took over. Having been discouraged by visits to other yarn stores in Calgary, I was overjoyed to find the kind of community of knitters for which I have long searched. Bess and her staff are always welcoming, and eager to help with any questions. The selection is amazing, especially if you prefer (like I do) the natural fiber content and hand dyed quality of the yarns stocked there. I have taken advantage of many of the classes offered, and now can proudly add spinner to my list of accomplishments.
I must agree with m; there is such a thing as a good customer; having whiled away many an afternoon knitting or spinning on one of the comfy couches there, I have personally witnessed proof that the bad customer does exist.

I've had hit and miss experiences here. The old owners (pre late-'09) were nuts, but at least they kept a LOT of yarn in stock. The new owner seems to run on a pretty thin margin and she's not really that helpful.

I went in one day looking for Malabrigo Worsted in a particular colourway, and she couldn't even be bothered to get up off the couch to help me find it. "Oh, the Malabrigo is over there", she said, with a wave of her hand. Well, it wasn't, so I asked again, and she said "Oh, maybe it's over there" and waved again. Well, it still wasn't, so I left, and she didn't even bother to ask if she could sell me something else.

Some of her staff are better and will actually assist you, but I find it pretty self-serve for the most part.

I have only been here a couple of times and I love it The staff has always been kind and willing to server me I love it when the owner is seated on her couch and knitting away while dream over her collection of yarns and patterns. I am one of the shoppers that like to be left alone so I can figure out what my next project will be I have been to another knitting room and purchased a set of Addi Clicks they were supposed to be the lace set but when I finally got around to opening them I found I had three number 5's and one number 4.5 and they were the turbos not the lace When I contacted the store the people there told me to send it back to the maker, the address they told me was on the internet , and they would gladly replace the twisted cord and correct the needle size Now that is what I would call after sales service Just after purchasing the needles else where I found out Bess sells them to I knew I should have purchased them from her but I was in the little shopping mall and had time to kill and as I found out all so money to wasted . I know I should have checked my needles , but like all of us we have busy lives and I just never thought that it would be such a big deal, lesson learnt, stay with a shop you can trust , I just wish I could shop there more often. o girls at Make 1 Thank you

Marie Landry
