Knitty City is amazingly well rounded. Knowledgeable staff, excellent selection of yarn, clientèle is fun and friendly.

I have been there for events, classes with staff, classes with artists. They offer the basics in crochet and knitting, but they also change up the additional classes monthly for variety. Some of the classes are (hairpin lace, wire knitting, socks, lace, enterlac, etc.).

The yarn, tools, notions/swag, etc. selection is extensive and if there is not something you need, Pearl the owner will do what she can to order it.

You can also just hang out and knit, there are a few groups, book club, sock support, mens group, kids groups and anything else you can think of. They will also wind yarn or let you wind it if you need to.

Again fabulous all around LYS!

great selection of books

I've been to this shop several times and never found the staff particularly friendly yet I keep reading about how pleasant they are. It really is bizarre to me, as I'm pretty much ignored every time I go in.
I don't find their selection of yarns very inspiring and the way that it's set up feels a bit disorganized to me. They do have a great selection of books and magazines, but every time I leave Knitty City I feel vaguely disappointed.

I visited Knitty City for the first time yesterday, and after reading such wonderful reviews on the web, I have to admit that I was a tad disappointed. The yarn selection was so-so, especially when he comes to non-wool or other vegan yarns. The selection of older knitting mags was excellent, and the service was quite benign. No real help from the man behind the register. I would not go out of my way to visit again.

I came to visit NYC, and found this store through Knit Map, so I went to check it out. The staff wasn't really overly friendly, but they did greet me when I came in and told me to ask if I needed any help. There was a pretty good selection, nothing to write home about (although still better than my LYS), but overall I was a bit underwhelmed. It wasn't bad, by any means, just a bit mediocre for a tourist. I'm sure it's a lovely LYS, though.
