Knitty City is amazingly well rounded. Knowledgeable staff, excellent selection of yarn, clientèle is fun and friendly.
I have been there for events, classes with staff, classes with artists. They offer the basics in crochet and knitting, but they also change up the additional classes monthly for variety. Some of the classes are (hairpin lace, wire knitting, socks, lace, enterlac, etc.).
The yarn, tools, notions/swag, etc. selection is extensive and if there is not something you need, Pearl the owner will do what she can to order it.
You can also just hang out and knit, there are a few groups, book club, sock support, mens group, kids groups and anything else you can think of. They will also wind yarn or let you wind it if you need to.
Again fabulous all around LYS!

I've been to this shop several times and never found the staff particularly friendly yet I keep reading about how pleasant they are. It really is bizarre to me, as I'm pretty much ignored every time I go in.
I don't find their selection of yarns very inspiring and the way that it's set up feels a bit disorganized to me. They do have a great selection of books and magazines, but every time I leave Knitty City I feel vaguely disappointed.

I visited Knitty City for the first time yesterday, and after reading such wonderful reviews on the web, I have to admit that I was a tad disappointed. The yarn selection was so-so, especially when he comes to non-wool or other vegan yarns. The selection of older knitting mags was excellent, and the service was quite benign. No real help from the man behind the register. I would not go out of my way to visit again.

I came to visit NYC, and found this store through Knit Map, so I went to check it out. The staff wasn't really overly friendly, but they did greet me when I came in and told me to ask if I needed any help. There was a pretty good selection, nothing to write home about (although still better than my LYS), but overall I was a bit underwhelmed. It wasn't bad, by any means, just a bit mediocre for a tourist. I'm sure it's a lovely LYS, though.

I'm a regular of this shop. Let me add some insight. If they are slow, you will get lots of help IF you want it. They are not sellers, they are not pushy. If they are busy, you may just get a smile. Understandable, right? If you ask for help (whether they are busy or not) YOU will get very friendly and useful advice. There is no pretense at this place. No yarn snobs here. If you are overlooked, it's because they are busy and no other reason. The yarn selection could be better but keep in mind that they try and have different price points and cater to the majority, not to specialties. The classes are great. Very nice crowd frequents this shop (if I may say so) so you will enjoy the company if you do a group class. Oh, and the cashiers are sometimes JUST cashiers and not knitters so if you have a question, ask the people on the floor.

I was a first time out of town visitor to the shop this past weekend. The store was busy with a class in progress. One of the workers greeted me and was very helpful helping me to select a lace-weight yarn for a pattern I had selected. Impressive selection of books. Interesting selection of yarns, especially sock yarn and Koigu. Nice selection of bags and accessories. Would definitely come for a return visit.

Hands-down my favorite yarn store in NYC. The ambiance is great, employees are friendly. I love their selection of yarns and if you don't find what you like, they can try to order the yarn for you. Love love this store!

My favorite place! Three wall units of sock yarn! Plenty of yarn to choose from (and there is a small selection of acrylics) and a fabulous selection of books.
And yes cashier guy handles your purchase, which is good since I would want my sales staff helping customers and not at the register. Questions should be directed to the rest of the staff who are quite knowledgeable. They do their best to help all the customers but sometimes you get the best advice from the knitters and crocheters that frequent the shop. Usually there are friendly customers in the store throughout the day. I send all of my out of town friends to Knitty City.

Do you sell online with a major credit card? If so, do you ship to Puerto Rico?
I look foward to hear from you.
Truly yours,
MYRNA

I featured this shop on my travel-knitting blog recently, and you can find my interview at
http://destiknitions.blogspot.com/2011/02/new-york-city-part-one-upper-west-side.html
You'll also find recommendations on places to eat, shop, etc in the neighborhood based on suggestions from the store. Enjoy!

Knitty City is wonderful. The store stocks beautiful yarn. The owner Pearl, is so friendly and helpful. She is also tuned in to everything in the knitting world (e.g. design, designers, current events, etc)
If you are in New York City and only have time for one knitting store, Knitty City should be your choice!
