I hate the way the florescent lights make this place feel like a basement. I've been there a couple of times and the woman was pretty condescending and completely un-helpful.

They do have a pretty nice range of yarns though from redheart to karabella and brown sheep to debbie bliss.

Granted I didn't ask for help other than where to find the yarn I was looking for, but I found the staff to be extremely pleasant. I called 10 minutes before they were closing and they said they'd wait for me to come pick up the yarn. That alone will make me go back.

More needles than I have seen anywhere else. A wide range of yarn, from acrylic to cashmere, though the cashmere is kept behind glass.

this is where i go for "emergency" yarn- when i get something in my head and need it right that minute or i'll die. whatever it is, i can always find something in the store to match what's in my brain. when the current owner first took over, the vibe changed completely. she seemed really impatient and uninterested in having customers. the shop itself had a wal-mart feel but the prices and selection ($2 a skein to $$50 a skein and everything in between) kept me coming back. i find the service a lot warmer and more helpful than it was at first. i think she might have been overwhelmed at running a store at first.

I just moved from Seattle to New York, I have visited several shops in NYC and whilst travelling in the train I asked a woman (who was knitting, of course) where she buys her supplies and she told me Knit-A-Way in Brooklyn and handed me one of their business cards. I went into the store on Thursday 7/17/08 (a little passed 7:00 o'clock, about closing time) with a ball of yarn and a pair of knitting needles and asked the woman behind the counter for help to cast on. Without any hesitation, not knowing whether I am a customer of hers or not, she said 'sure I can show you.' and proceeding right away to teach me the casting on method. I was very happy and satisfied with the customer service she has provided me. I have had bad experiences visiting the shops in NYC. This is going the be my favorite yarn shop, therefore I have no hesitation in recommending same to other people. Pay a visit and experience yourself.

I have gone to the shop about 3 times, I have found that people who work there are unfriendly ,one woman who is sitting at the table on every occasion I've gone there is very,very argumentive towards me. She seems to feel that she is the only one in the world who can knit. the owner does not seem to know any thing about knitting, only selling and making money. I dont think I will recommend the store or go there again.that's not the way to do busines and keep customers.

I have been to this shop a couple times and the owner/ customer service person is clueless. I remembered her working there as the cashier for the previous owner. She was not customer friendly, very hostile and rude to customers. I pay for my yarn so I would shop anywhere but the service at this shop sucks.

I am the co-ordinator of a knitting circle in Park Slope and 1 of the members mentioned to the group of this wonderful store, Knit-A-Way in Atlantic Avenue. The group had decided to pay a visit, and 'oh my god' what a shop. No regrets from any of the members of the group. We all were so excited. The owner was very friendly and welcoming and what a selection of yarns, needles, notions, book, etc. Such we have not seen anywhere before. This is our favorite yarn shop in New York City. We fell in love on our first visit.
Stay open Knit-A-Way.

I visited this store yesterday for the first time. I am a beginning knitter. The staffwas very friendly , helpful and encouraging. There was so many different types of yarn to choose from! I will definitely be visiting this store again.

LOVE this store!

Knit-A-Way has a HUGE selection of yarns, and the number of different brands makes you feel like a kid in a candy store. You'll also find tons of notions and tools, including a bunch of different brands of needles.

There's a ball winder and yarn swift you can use (free) if you buy hanks. There are knitting books, includng pattern books, galore, and several knitting magazines.

The owner has always been very pleasant and helful to me, and she has endless patience. She's also happy to special order a yarn she doesn't have in the store.

Once, when paying for my yarn, I happened to casually mention that my purchase was for a chemo cap. To my surprise and delight, the owner gave me 10%! That's a business owner with compassion and smarts.
