Lovely little shop. It's stuffed full of their sweaters and yarns. Check out the mill ends - if a skein is off by a hair it is super cheap.

This is one of my favorite yarn shops in the world! If you're looking for novelty yarns or synthetics, then this is isn't the place for you. But if you like wool and natural fibers, you'll love it here.

The shop itself is very small and tightly packed with its own yarn and patterns. Behind the shop (in the rest of the building) is the spinnery itself, and if the shop isn't full of customers the spinnery staff person working there will very likely give you a tour of the spinnery. It's amazing to see the antique machines at work and huge bags of unprocessed wool.

It's not a high-tech place, but to me it is very much how knitting should FEEL.

I am so excited. Our son will be attending college in Putney and now I have a yarn shop to visit as well! Looking forward to it!

The pin on the map doesn't seem to be right. As far as I can tell, the spinnery is in Putney in Southern VT, while the map pin is near Montpellier in Northern/Central VT.

Extremely friendly. Got a free tour of the premices with explanation how their yarn was made. How cool is that?!

Small shop with their yarns. Very friendly. Extremely easy to find as it's right off the highway.

I visited as part of the I-91 Shop Hop last week. We arrived near the end of the day and got a tour of the spinnery (only one machine at work, but still fascinating) and we had a very nice chat with the shopkeeper/collective member and an unhurried browse of the yarns in the little shop. They also have a nice selection of their own and other patterns and books. I believe these folks process the yarn of a local producer in my area, which made the tour all the more meaningful to me, seeing how they keep track of different orders. Since this was part of an 11-shop yarn crawl, I made only a modest purchase, but I was really tempted by several of their wools and wool/Tencel blends. A mall shopper may suffer a little sticker shock, but a short tour of the mill will show how labor intensive turning wool into yarn can be. (I would love to be there some time when they are blending different color wools into one of their heathers!)

Note to yarn tourists: Green Mountain Spinnery is right across the street from Putney Inn. Makes for an easy impromtu browse, even with family in tow.
