The nicest yarn shop in the center of Amsterdam (only a few minutes from the Dam). A big collection of Rowan yarns, Addi needles, Misti Alpaca en a huge collection of knitting and crochet books! Every knitters visiting Amsterdam should visit De Afstap!

The Afstap is a nice little shop, but it has its pluses and minuses. The selection is very focused on Rowan and the RYC brand yarns, with minimal stocking of alternates. I get the impression that they are aiming at the high end boutique knitter who can afford to spend €10 + on a ball of yarn. Usually when I've asked for help on a project, I've pointed to the more expensive Rowan yarns, even if a cheaper substitute might be available. It may to boost sales, or that they have a sales relationship with Rowan to push their yarns.
The shop itself is clean and well organized and very centrally located.
The customer service is here and there, if they're busy with someone they may ignore you for a while, but in my recent experiences, the staff has made an attempt to say hello, ask you if you need help at least once or twice. Probably because they've been burned on several websites for ignoring customers. It seems that they are making an effort.

Nice little shop. Some beautiful yarns. I wish my daughter was more patient, I would have spent the afternoon there.

It's a fine yarn shop. The customer service is what sucks. The first comment is years old. It WAS the nicest yarn shop in the Center of Amsterdam. Now...not so much. But it's cute and expensive, if you like that sort of thing.

A lovely shop, I'm surprised from the unsatisfied costumer's above. I think service was good and I really enjoyed the variety of yarns and books, especially because there barely are any knitting shops around where I'm from. Maybe for someone from the states it looks small, but to me it was heaven! :)

I posted as "Linda" in 2011. Just wanted to follow up- I bought some wonderful sock yarn at this shop while visiting Amsterdam from Utah in the US. I love wearing them-- it reminds me of a wonderful trip.
