I am a dedicated knitter and have used lots of Bendigo wool. The classic 5 ply I am using now has an annoying tendency to split.. Also Pattern PT 8173 5 ply cardigan it would have been handy if the number of rows between butotonholes had been included..

Another shop where it's all about who's working and what you're looking for. I had a great time here with a friend, picking out a care package of wool for her sister in the United States. The back room is a little treasure trove -- but again it's about going in and knowing what you're looking for. Not the type of place to try a first or early project.

If you are looking for no-nonsense, hard-wearing yarn then BWM has a good selection. The large balls (usually 200g) are great because you have many many fewer ends to weave in. I love this yarn for blankets, jumpers, long scarves and any large project really. (You do feel as though you are carrying around a football in your knitting bag though!) Postage is free for orders over $30, and you can order a jumper's worth of yarn for under $50.
The colour range can feel limited and a bit old fashioned, but there are nice colours to be found. Many knitters buy lighter shades to overdye (see the Ravelry group Bendigo Woollen Mills Users for heaps of info on dyeing and all other aspects).
Customer service varies from comedy-sketch rudeness to quite helpful. The mill shop is quite basic but well stocked. It is also next to the Bendigo tram depot and museum for the tramspotters among us :-)

I have only purchased online or over the phone from BWM. It's basic no nonsence yarn but at fantastic prices. Have never had the opportunity to visit but the over the phone service has always been pleasant and delivery of items very fast.
