Gail, the owner, wants people to feel welcome to come in and knit, and she has a nice big table for that reason. Lots of sock yarn and Plymouth. It's not the to-go place for trendy yarn, but I think of it more like good, solid comfort food. Gail also has a lot of cute doll knitting patterns.

There is always a mostly-empty rack of about 6 skeins of yarn in front of this place. It looks terrible -- how is that inviting? The front window is festooned with out-of-date calico curtains and frumpy looking crochet-covered dolls. If you can get past the terrible first impression on the outside, the yarn selection is so-so (plenty of novelty yarns and run-of-the-mill offerings). If you find a yarn you like, the colors are not at all interesting -- the buyer for this shop has a preference for dull/drab colors (except the novelty yarn -- that's bright as heck!)
Meanwhile, I have been ignored on all three occasions when I have gone in there, trying to give it a second, and even a *third* chance hoping that, "It's new, so perhaps it will get better..." No. Plus, the "nice big table" makes it uncomfortable and difficult to actually get to the yarn on that wall. The table is way too big for the shop!
This shop makes me lament the loss of Yarn! (great selection) and Tuscany Yarn (beautiful store) as Alameda's LYSs even more. Alameda is ripe for a yarn shop that serves today's current knitters. It does not have to be "trendy" like the other reviewer suggests... it just needs to offer more interesting selections in keeping with today's interests. Except for the wool, you can find much of what AYC is offering at Beverly's. This is not why knitters go to a LYS.
If the owner of this yarn store reads this review, I urge you to visit other yarn stores in the area -- look at Article Pract, Imaginknit, etc. Please give today's knitters a reason to stay on the island!
(At least get rid of those curtains.)
