Has a "Sit and Knit" every Wednesday from 7-9, also lots of classes and events. Carries Berroco, Filatura di Crosa, Debbis Bliss, Ella Rae, Araucania, Neighborhood Fiber Co., Brown Sheep, Noro, Tahki, just to name A FEW...tons of sock yarn, also Addi needles (including lace), luxury yarns, Lantern Moon needles, good book selection, friendly and knowledgeable staff. Highly recommended!

I second the recommendation for this shop. They were so helpful and nice. There are also big comfy couches to lounge around on and they encourage you to just sit, have a cup of tea, and knit whenever you want.

I also love this (relatively new) store. It's large, airy, lovely to look at, and has a GREAT stock of yarn, needles, and other "toys." It's a great location, too! When you're done shopping, you can stop over at Franklin's for a snack and browse the general store :-)

The mark of a good yarn shop - when there was a shop closer to me, but I drove to A Tangled Skein instead. The level of service at this shop is really unique to the DC. It's a very down-to-earth, friendly place where they actually wind yarn for you (without looking incredibly annoyed). They stock to appeal to every knitter - there is real selection no matter what type of project you are looking to make and the selection includes an array of price points.

this place is the bomb!! i loved it! the service was helpful (they know a lot), and they have a great selection of yarn for everything you're working on - from bulky to finger weight yarn. they have a price tag on everything, unlike some places i've been, so when you get to the cash register you won't be unpleasantly surprised by how much everything is. GO HERE IT'S AWESOME!

Great selection and service. The only downfall is that it was a little dark inside. Overall, a great place and I'll go back.

I went to DC to visit a friend. While there, I heard so much about "A Tangled Skein" that I had to visit. I'm so glad I did! I loved the store! The atmosphere was wonderful, the selection is outstanding, and the people are just so nice...I spent wayyyy over budget because I was just enjoying myself. I highly recommend this store if you are in the neighborhood.

This is my go-to yarn shop. They have a good size selection of lovely yarns in all price ranges and lots of great accessories, books, and other items. The only thing that annoys me about shopping here is that it takes forever to check out; the employees always seem mystified by the computer system, no matter who is at the desk when I shop there.

I went for the first time today--it was amazing. The staff were very friendly, the prices were reasonable and the selection...the selection was just about perfect. I will make this my everyday yarn store.

This is seriously the BEST yarn store ever. I will miss it dearly when I move next month.

It's amazing to review the responses from other viewers. . . I had a different experience with my first visit. I don't feel that I was greeted nicely. The young lady behind the desk gave me a strange look (not warm or friendly at all). I mentioned to her that it was my first time in the area and that I was happy to find a yarn store close by. I had to take the initiative to browse around.

I did like the organization of the yarn and the two sitting areas and I believe that type of surrounding can be very helpful to knitters and their projects.

I do plan to visit the store again and hopefully I will have a better visit. I really want to find a yarn store that I can be comfortable with, one that I can sit down with other knitters and share ideas and projects. As I mentioned earlier, on my next visit I hope to have a more pleasant experience.

Maybe the young lady behind the desk was having a bad day!

Very impressed. Lots of wonderful yarns, good selection of needles, friendly & helpful staff. Lots of seating to sit-n-knit. Will definitely manke many return trips.

Great shop, with LOTS of yarn and a good selection of books, knitting bags, needles, crochet hooks, etc. Staff is friendly and helpful and there is plenty of parking just down the street. They also carry some local/independent yarns, such as Neighborhood Fiber Co.

Absolutely phenomenal yarn store. HUGE selection of yarns, from basic (Encore and Ella Rae) to luxury (Jade Sapphire Silk/Cashmere and Jojoland Cashmere) and everything inbetween. They also have a great selection of hand-dyed yarns, like Neighborhood Fiber Company and Claudia's Handpainted. The organization of the yarn is genious - BY WEIGHT! It makes it so darn easy to find things! I also love that each skein has a price tag on it. There's no question about how much something costs.

Additionally, the staff are incredibly friendly and helpful. They don't hover over your shoulder, but are happy to answer any questions or to just chat about yarn. The location is wonderful - not only are they across the street from Franklin's - a great restaurant/general store/brewery - they are right across the hall from The Beader's Workshop if you need beads for your project. This is the best yarn store in the Metro DC area BY FAR!

This is the best yarn store in the DC metroplitican area. I love going into this store. It always has what I need and will order something for me and let me know when it arrives. The store people are very helpful and knowledgeable. It has a "come in" atmosphere where you feel very welcomed. You can take you time (I know I do) in looking at all the yarn and merchandise an avid knitter/crocheter needs. I knit and crochet garments for my wonderful grandchildren and when I need some yarn for my projects, I go directly to A Tangle Skein.

There are things I like and things I don't like about A Tangled Skein. It has a great selection of yarns at various price points, and there are good periodic sales (there's one every Friday the 13th, plus others). There are plenty of comfortable places to sit, and the shop stocks a large array of pattern, books, tools, and items that would make great gifts. You can get comfortable and hang around for a long time. Parking isn't difficult, and there's a wonderful casual restaurant across the street, Franklin's -- I've had many a Sunday lunch there while waiting for the shop to open at 1:00.

On the minus side, the shop is dark -- seriously dark toward the back, where there's a large table. The sofas and chairs in the front of the store get more light, at least during the day.

The level of friendliness varies. Staff interactions with customers seem to run the gamut from speaking only when approached to being rather overbearing. While knowledgeable, they sometimes seem to assume that customers know more than they actually do. Inexperienced knitters looking for basic instruction may be scared off by a mile-a-minute, highly technical description when they just want basic information.

My bottom line: because I don't usually need help and am happy to poke around, I enjoy the shop -- particularly when I go in with or meet a friend there. When I need help, I often want to finish up and leave pretty quickly.

Agree with most comments above. Great selection, service is hit or miss, dark atmosphere, and parking not too shabby. It was the best store I found within 30 miles and would make trip back there if I find myself in Baltimore or DC.

I just loved this store, yarn in every corner. I took a spinning class and loved it, I only wished they had used/sold real spindles, they do have pretty roving though. No one came up to me the first time I went in the store, but I considered that a positive, I just wanted to look around. After I met everyone they greeted me and were very friendly even watching my newborn while I took the spinning class. Parking was abundant and close, but I wish the crosswalk was marked clearly, I was afraid of getting run over, but that isn't anything the store could control.
