Knitmap iPhone Updates

I just wanted to let you know that we've made some improvements to the iPhone version of Knitmap. It now looks more like the original site, and it has the new "Near Me" option that will automatically locate stores based on your current location.

Just in case you didn't know, Knitmap for iPhone lets you find yarn stores in a simple, iPhone friendly display. Out and about and forget exactly where that nearby yarn store is? Just open Knitmap for iPhone and touch the Near Me button, set any other options you want, and click Search.

There's no special address, just go to Knitmap.com on your phone's browser. Don't forget to bookmark Knitmap on your iPhone, or better yet add it to your home screen (I love the little icon)!

Before You Walk, You Must Crawl...

        So let's crawl already!

I am very excited to announce the launch of the Knitmap Yarn Crawl feature! I've wanted the ability to create a local yarn store crawl from the very outset of Knitmap. We are going to be adding additional features to the crawl in the coming weeks, but in the mean time I want you all to play with it and let us know what you think. Tell us how you'll use it, how it works for you, and any additional features you'd like to see.

Here's how it works:

* Sign up or log in to your Knitmap account.
* Search for yarn stores as usual.
* When you've found a store that you want to add to your crawl, select the new "Add to a Crawl" button on the right side of the store's detail page. You can add the store to a new crawl, or to any existing crawl that you've created.
* From the New Crawl page you can enter a name and a description for your crawl. Keep in mind that all of this information will be available to all of the Knitmap users.
* If you know the name or location of additional stores you can add them from the New Crawl page, or you can save your crawl and return to the map to keep looking.
* While you're adding the stores that you want to visit, you can drag and drop them in the list to change their order. Less driving time means more time to shop!
* Once you are happy with your crawl you can save and print it.
* If you want to make changes, you can edit your crawl at any time.

That's it! Fun and easy!

This will be perfect to plan an afternoon of yarn shopping on your next vacation! Planning a cross country road trip? Map out stores along the way. Do you have some spare time in a new city? Why not see what their local stores have to offer? I've started a crawl to list my favorite local Portland yarn stores for anyone attending Sock Summit 2009, and I'm working on a list of stores that I want to visit while we're in San Diego later this month. Where are you going this summer? I want to see your crawls!

Just remember...yarn bought on vacation doesn't count as stash; it's souvenirs!

Twitter and a New Feature!

Store owners, this new feature is for you! You can now sign up to manage your own location on Knitmap! This means that you'll be able to directly update your store's features, address, hours, and notes as often as you'd like. Use the notes section to post about upcoming sales, classes, or new inventory. You'll also receive notification whenever a comment is left for your store.

To register to manage your location, click the new 'Manage Location' box (above the map) on your store's detail page, and follow the instructions to receive your confirmation code via text message. Don't worry if your carrier isn't listed (we're working on adding more all the time), just send us an email with your name, Knitmap user name, store name, city/state, and a phone number (for verification purposes) and we'll email you a confirmation code. As always, all of your personal information provided to Knitmap will remain confidential.

Once you've signed up to manage your listing, you'll see that we've made a badge that you can place on your website. It will direct your web visitors directly to your listing at Knitmap!

Try it out, and let me know what you think!

Knitmap is now on Twitter. We'll be tweeting with new features like this one, new stores, and other events that you won't want to miss! Follow Knitmap here.

Notice Anything Different?

Our trusty Knitmap programmer, Matt, has been working really hard lately to complete overhaul the site. While you may not see many changes apart from the minor design changes, and a few tweaks here and there, I have so much more control over the back end of things! This means a cleaner database, better maps, faster response times, and the groundwork for some new very exciting features that will be rolled out soon.

We also cleaned up a few of those tedious housekeeping things like starting an FAQ, putting our Privacy Policy and Terms of Use agreements into writing. Check them out and if you have any questions about them, feel free to contact us!

We've checked and double checked that everything is up and working, but there's always something funny that sneaks past. If you find something that isn't right, please let us know.

So, what do you think? Pretty snazzy yeah?

Things That Rock

Thank you to everyone who commented with your suggestions for improvements to the site. They are all good ideas, and we're going to be very busy this year implementing as many as we can. Keep checking back for updates as we get them up and running.

I was starting to worry about what prizes to give away, but my LYS came through for me again! I had just asked Matt what he thought I should give away when I opened up my email to find their newsletter announcing the new arrival of the anxiously awaited, much coveted, Socks That Rock by Blue Moon Fiber Arts. Perfect! What better prize to give away to some wonderful users who rock!
<img src="/images/shared/skein1.jpg" alt=""</>

After much deliberation, I picked up two skeins of the lightweight 100% superwash merino in colorways Algae and Puck’s Mischief. It was only because I had just last weekend cataloged my entire stash on Ravelry, and was a little overwhelmed by its considerable volume, that I was able to convince myself not to buy any for me too.

These lovely skeins will be going to...

I’d like to ask all of you to add to our list. What would you like to see at KnitMap? What changes would you like? Features? Please leave a comment or send me an email with your 2008 wishes for KnitMap.

Enquiring Minds, Take 2

Thank you everyone for taking time to share your thoughts. I found your comments really interesting. The theme of friendly, helpful, knowledgeable staff came up the most often for what makes a yarn store great. I would tend to agree since the ladies who run my LYS definitely keep me coming back!

This has been fun. I think I may do this often; ask a question and poll the users. It makes me want to chuck the day job and start my own yarn store consulting service. You can be my focus group; I could get paid in yarn, and you know I would share the wealth.

Speaking of…I have randomly (and by randomly I mean I asked Matt to pick a number between 1 and 16) selected a lucky commenter number 11! Counting from the earliest comment to the most recent comment, one entry per person, skipping me (and don’t think I wouldn’t want to snag this skein for myself!) number 11 is mi_kitter!

I have naturally been thinking a lot about yarn stores lately. I’ve been reading comments that have been left for stores in cities I’ve never visited (yet!), and I’ve been thinking about what makes a yarn store special. I am fortunate to have several wonderful shops in my city (go Portland!), and all of these stores are different. They each have their own flavor and feel, and everyone has their own favorite for varying reasons.

So, what I want to know is, what makes your favorite yarn store special? Is it the staff? The selection? The classes? Maybe it has a cozy chair and good lattes, or it’s the convenience of being right on the bus line home?

I’m curious and I’d like to hear from you. Leave a comment and tell me what makes your LYS great. To sweeten the deal, I’ll be selecting a comment at random to receive a skein of Classy (worsted weight, 100% superwash merino) in colorway Deep Seaflower, by Dream In Color yarns.

My apologies for being late with the contest prizes. I haven't forgotten, but real-life has a way of messing up best-laid plans. Prize photos and winners will appear here on Saturday, I promise!

When I was working with Matt on the development of this site, one of the issues that I struggled with was whether or not to include chain stores (i.e. Michaels, Hobby Lobby, or department stores that just happen to carry some yarn too). I went back and forth, and ultimately decided to leave it up to you the users.

So, we launched and asked for your comments, questions, and participation. Your response has been fabulous! We've had such positive feedback, and really good suggestions to improve the site. I also received some comments and questions on both sides of the chain-store debate. After some more work with Matt, here is the solution we're proposing. I'd love to hear what you think.

KnitMap Raffle #1

I fully intended to post the winners of this week's raffles earlier today, but the day job unhinged its mighty jaws and swallowed me whole this week. You know how it goes! However, I have good stuff, and it's worth the wait!

This week's lucky winners will receive one skein of beautiful, handpainted 100% superwash merino sock yarn from Portland local Painted Skeins, in colorways "Afterglow," "Nest," and "Zutano". All prizes were purchased from my very own local yarn store, Twisted. Big thanks to Shannon and Emily for helping me to pick everything out!

So without further ado, let's get to the winners of the inaugural KnitMap Raffle-O-Goodness...
